The only way to accelerate with normal traffic from a stop in a Hybrid would be a Plug-In version.
What you gain in hypermile driving taking off means you don't have much juice left to support 45-50 mph cruising in electric mode. Mine gets better mileage using the gas engine to get to speed then forcing it into electric.

I would actually like a larger battery. Go further on the electric mode.
Are you going to stop twice as often??....

Gotta charge it somehow. Ford has a lot of data on hybrids and picked the Goldilocks size- not too big, not too small.

Agree.

No benefit to baby it off the line.... for long.... but I do for about the first 10 mph. The ponies like to run.

A) I want/need a little "room"' between myself and the car ahead so when the gas engine comes on, the ponies can run in the sweet spot. About 2200-2500 rpm.

B) The Atkinson engine has lower torque than an Otto cycle engine, so it's not great at moving the truck from a dead stop, but the electric motor is well suited for this.

Some people say short trips don't count. Why?

When I do this 100 times in 2 months during the same tank, I think it counts.

To be fair, this was on a warm engine already.

But.... I do this every lunch break, 5 days a week. Tell me why we need a larger battery.

Out of 11 minutes of driving, my engine ran a total of 32 seconds. Yes, I timed it.
🤓

And this won't work so well in cold weather. Nice, 73°F here.

I can usually get up to about 45-50 mph in just electric mode during my 17 mile commute to and from work, and overall anywhere from 41-51 mpg for the trip depending on how much farm traffic I hit. And that's with AC on. I wish the EV coach display was a bit more informative with power and charge levels (think Prius energy flow screen but with more stats), and maybe I could get a few more MPG per trip out of it. But overall given location and local driving conditions I'm still pulling 600+ miles out of the fuel tank with the mpg coming in around 43 on average. I don't really think that a second battery is going to be worth it in the long run with how efficient the current software is at managing the battery levels.

One day soon there will be shops that build and modify electric/hybrid vehicles. Just not yet.
Ford, and all other hybrid manufacturers, can’t source enough lithium batteries as it is. Supply chains aren’t getting better, they’re getting worse.
This isn’t 2020 anymore, and those days are over whether we like it or not.

Good luck passing an emissions test. EPA restrictions would probably prohibit any modifications to hybrids. Besides, the entire power train programming, including the motor design, wouldn’t play well with a battery mod.

This ain’t the old days where you can slap a different carburetor and manifold on your engine and have it work. Chips have been around for a while but those are slight modifications compared to adding an extra lithium battery to a hybrid.

Just for fun, let’s suppose you can install an extra battery pack in your Maverick. It’s probably going to cost around 3-4K for the battery alone.
Still wanna do it?

Battery for a new Lightning is $4,000+, I was tasked with trying to buy one a year ago. I seriously doubt an extra Maverick battery would cost the same.

I don't know how so many of you are claiming you won't get better mileage by increasing the battery capacity and its pointless, I can almost guarantee you will get better mileage.

Ford didn't magically choose this to balance capacity vs weight or whatever else metric you guys think. It's probably the cheapest/smallest they can get away with and still have good enough capacity to handle regular driving.

- You can 'coast' using slight electric motor to keep from slowing as fast which causes the battery to drain.
- Braking is not the only way for the battery to charge, it also charges while the combustion engine is running

I could regularly do this in my old Lexus because the battery capacity was shown, and I could alter my driving if I know I'm going on the highway soon or not.

ONE MODULE COSTS $4400.

Nov 26, 2022

The Drive Electric YouTube channel takes a dive into how much it would cost to replace the battery in the Lightning.

From that were able to find out for an extended range Lightning it would cost around $4,400 USD per battery module to replace and $35,960 USD to replace the entire battery pack. To replace the battery pack would also cost around $675 USD in labor costs."

And I retired last February and as far as I know, still waiting on one module.
