. It's the nature the beast. Obviously alot people buying a truck may at sometime want to tow something.I picked up my other car from the body shop yesterday (minor scratches repaired). The owner asked what my truck was. When I told him it was a Maverick, he told me he has had two Mavericks in his shop that were rear ended and totaled. Both had trailer hitches. He said it was the trailer hitch that caused the truck to be totaled. The hitch caused the unibody to buckle. He said if the trailer hitch had not been there the truck would have not been totaled. His opinion after 30 plus years in the business.
. For a trailer hitch to be effective and useful, it has to be solidly attached to the frame or a frame type structure.
If you take a close look at the pictures that have been posted. The structure that the trailer hitch is mounted to has an area just in front of where the hitch is attached that is meant to crumple.
. In order for a vehicle to be strong, but yet lightweight to meet EPA standards the type of Steel used is a lightweight strong Boron Steel. Ford itself will not allow repairs to the steel it must be replaced.
