I've been driving for 30 years, and in that time have had 2 windshield chips that needed to be filled. I've had my 2023 Maverick- my first Ford- for about 6 months and since Nov 16th have had to have 5 windshield chips filled. What is happening?? What are these windshields made of?? My driving environment hasn't changed. Only my car. Did Ford just use the cheapest materials possible? Is this happening to anyone else?
One year of ownership, zero chips so far.

Our roads are so bad around here, that I keep one of these on hand
UNIIOON Windshield Crack Repair Kit, Glass Repair Fluid 4 Pcs Car Glass Repair Kit, Windshield Repair Kit, Cracks Gone Glass Repair Kit Automotive Quick Fix for Chips, Cracks, Star-Shaped, Bulls-Eye https://a.co/d/hyDs2y8

If your insurance doesn’t cover repairs, these work well. It takes a bit of practice, but even if it looks bad, it will keep it from spreading.
Use a hairdryer on the inside of the glass to help spread the resin.

I feel like I was getting a lot of cracks for a while, and then none in years. Just got one in our Prius the other day.

I had to do a road trip in my 2023 XLT Lariat Hybrid and not even 30 miles in, a big rig tossed something and hit the windshield hard, but I saw no damage. When I washed the bugs off at the next fill up, I noticed a very small nick in the glass, no big deal. The next day, just after filling up in Barstow CA. and headed for Bakersfield, I got caught up in two small sandstorms which only lasted for a few seconds and I thought nothing of it. (Although going from 100 to 0% visibility does get the heartrate up) When I got to Sacramento, I went to a carwash to get all the bugs and dust off and that's when I found hundreds of little pockmarks on both my windshield and paint. I am still living with the damage as a new windshield installed is around a grand.

Is this from the dealership? Or do you have to find a place to order one from after market?
I purchased the deflector on ebay and installed it myself. It is the: Auto Ventshade [AVS] Bugflector II/Hood Shield. I paid $65. shipped to my home. The link on ebay is no longer available.
I think you can still get it at Real Truck, but not sure. Some complain about it not fitting correctly. I had to enlarge only one hole to make it fit on my truck. This type sits off of the paint and uses push pins on the under side of the hood to secure it. I drove 90 mph down the freeway to test that it was secure and it passed with flying colors. No movement at all. I like this design better than the stick on type and it also protects the outer fenders too! I hope this helps you out. 🤟

Check your insurance, my State Farm includes $100 Windshield replacement.

17500 miles, on 2022 hybrid XLT, I travel gravel roads frequently, back country dirt roads, campground roads, washed out roads, two tracks roads, no cracks or chips requiring filling, dealer installed paint and windshield protection applied before I took possession of the truck they claim the Resist All & Crystal Fusion will last 7+ years. Now the paint has a few chips from God knows what but not on the leading edges. Worth the $800 up charge.

I do not tailgate or drive on gravel roads. I do drive a lot on I95 between DC and the surrounding 200 miles or so. Admittedly 17,000 miles is a lot in 6 months, but if it were my driving I would have seen this with any if my Toyotas or Hyundais or BMWs and I just haven't. I love my Maverick, I hate that it is a Ford. This just confirms my fears with buying a Ford to begin with. I wanted the Maverick so badly.
It's all random. I drove a lot on 95 in the days, and that is some nasty roads with a lot of construction. I even had a bolt fall off of a flyover bridge project on 695 in Baltimore and smash my rear window in a 2007 Mustang convertible. Had to replace the whole top. Luckily, I carry $0 deductibles on comprehensive. Body shop confirmed that was the cause by the bolt he found in the folds.

Cermaic does not protect paint from chipping/erosion.

FWIW, pretty much any new car is going to have this issue, even more expensive vehicles. I have a hunch it's due to attempted weight reduction resulting in lower quality glass.

weight reduction and cost......suppliers are asked to make concessions every year....

you guys may want to consider getting a bug deflector. I wanted one like in post #12, but they quit making that type. So I got the next best thing. No chips so far "Knock on wood"

Busy Weekend.jpg
Went with the AVS bug defector...Sits away from hood and provides more protection....Easy install and looks great....

Something that no one has mentioned, that I do.

Simply add a layer of car wax to the front windshield periodically. Makes for a slicker outer surface area. Results in a fewer visible impacts from insects small stones and worn wiper blade scratches. I prefer paste car wax.

Of course, larger stones are going to crack every windshield, but so far, I have escaped damage. Also, the windshield on the Lariats may be of a higher quality than the standard windshields, since they are said to have additional sound resistant properties - I don’t know for sure.

I have a ā€˜22 hot pepper 🌶 red Lariat.

This windshield ge

🤣 ok thank you for the recommendation. I wish I had thought of that. I've been driving for over 30 years and this has not happened before. But I'm glad you had such a meaningful contribution to the discussion.🤣
ā€˜Probably thinks you live in Albuquerque, lol. I’ve gotten most of my chips from trucks going fast in the right lane next to me. The last was the worst, it skipped, chipped twice and cracked in between so I had to replace the hi tech windshield, cost $2600.

Check your SF agent, too! My agent told me you could NOT get zero deductible for glass, no way, no how, not something SF offered. Changed agents, found out of course you can, and the $ change was negligible.

I got two chips within first 1000 miles, first one within 3 days of ownership! Second one was a golf ball sized chunk dropped from a rock truck coming towards me on a two lane road. I'd just had to replace the factory crap tires before that happened, so I got the chip repaired as best as possible, praying it holds for a while.

As other have said, I've been driving 50+ years, had one windshield replaced across dozens of vehicles. The Mav does seem especially sensitive.
