After reading a couple of similar threads, I hesitate to post. However, it does involve safety so putting it out there. I will update the thread with more information as I have it.

2024 Maverick XLT gas, fwd. Purchased new by me about three weeks ago. Truck has 470 miles on it. This morning I left for work, driving slowly in my subdivision at about 20 mph. Went to stop at the community mailbox and the brake pedal went to the floor. I pumped it and could not build pressure. After about the sixth pedal pump, I got a juddering — similar to what it feels like when you trigger ABS — and the truck did stop.

There were no signs of fluid either under the truck or in my garage. No warning lights triggered on the dash. I did not check brake fluid level, but there have been no signs of leakage under the truck.

I shut the truck off, restarted, drove a bit and it felt fine. However, thinking how potentially dangerous this is, I called roadside assistance and had the truck towed to Chapman Ford in Scottsdale. I briefed the service advisor on what I’d experienced. I will update after I hear back from the dealership.

Nothing yet from dealer. No loaner cars available, but I pushed it and they ended up getting me into a rental car on Ford’s dime.

Enterprise advised I had to choose a Ford in order for Ford to pay for my rental. That’s ok. My choice? A convertible Mustang!! I’m not sure who buys this car, but I do appreciate having some transportation. Hope to know something about my truck tomorrow.

There was a thread a while ago with a guy who said he lost brake pedal and hit small business after it jumped a curve. The thread got nasty and I don't think we ever did find out what happened.

Not sure if it was an Eco or hybrid version mav. This occurrence sounds a little similar.

Scary if pedal drops to floor. Good that their was no crash involved.

Not sure how the power brakes work on the mav. I would suspect something to do with the power assist for brakes since no leaks in hydraulics.

It was a hybrid version.
After Old Sarge 85 years old told the police the brakes didn't work. Jumped the curb drove across the sidewalk and into the front of the business. The bizarre part is that the police and the fire department allowed him to drive home in the same unsafe vehicle.šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
Ford Maverick 2024 EB brake failure 20250619_102547

How can somebody cause this damage because of a brake failure and claim they've never had a major problem with their Maverick.
This was posted May 9 this year. Months after the crashšŸ‘‡šŸ‘‡
I decided to buy a Mac after watching several Tube Videos produced by the Ford engineer who developed the vehicle. I am 85 years old and this is most likely the last vehicle I will ever buy. I am not sorry that I bought a Mav. I have a 2022 XLT Hybrid, Cactus Grey, and I have only had one problem. The tire pressure sensor on the left front wheel went out. Ford replaced it under warranty. Otherwise the truck has done everything I needed it to do. Today at noon I had 32,845 miles on the truck. The gas milage over those 32,000 plus miles is 37.8 mpg. I still have people come up to me in parking lots to ask about the truck. I had a guy yesterday as I was going in to my barber for a haircut stop me to ask about it. He currently drives a Ford 150 and he said straight up that he never need a truck as big as the 150. So who knows he may decide to go the Mac route too. I do understand that a number of people have had serious problems with their Mavs. I am not one of those.
Interesting not one word about his brake failure. I would think that would have been a major problem.

Peoples’ willingness to offer conjecture with no facts and fearlessly proclaim WAGs as truth is the reason I hesitated to post. In the end, safety outweighs drama.

Sorta like the assertion above regarding negligence. In the actual world, firefighters have no legal authority to prevent someone from driving. And most cops, having been on the scene of hundreds of collisions, have heard the phrase ā€œmy brakes didn’t workā€ on probably 75% of those incidents. If there’s nothing legally preventing a vehicle owner from driving (injury, intoxication, license status) and no actual evidence beyond hearsay of a dangerous mechanical condition, allowing a driver to remove a vehicle from a non-injury collision would be pretty normal in my experience.

I am neither a mechanic nor an engineer. But my understanding of power assist doesn’t comport with my experience. There still should be pedal and there was not. Mine went to the floor with no resistance until I got the weird ABS-style lockup (still with no pedal). As soon as I shut down and restarted, the pedal was back. My experience yesterday gives some credibility to the other thread. It’s likely the brakes responded normally after the incident. Mine sure did.

No word yet from the dealer. I will make the NHTSA report as suggested above.

This post is the exact reason if I know I have to stop, ie red light, stop sign, people crossing street, whatever reason, I start braking a half block away. I never drive up to the intersection and then hit the brakes. I starting braking 100 or more feet from the stop. This way if the brakes go I have time to react. People behind me don't necessarily like it but no one on this planet is that important that I care if they are inconvenienced a little because it takes them a few seconds longer to get to the light.

Posting this with many caveats, but maybe the information will help someone.
  • Not meant to replace dealer diagnostics
  • Be very careful, test in a wide open space
  • Test at very low speed.
  • Know how to use the emergency brake beforehand.
  • Every vehicle behaves differently
I had a 2005 Trailblazer with similar symptoms. Brake pedal would go to the floor, shuddering, and delayed, but eventual stop. It was about 17 years old at the time. Problem was a bad ABS controller. At the suggestion of a shade tree mechanic, we pulled the fuse for the ABS system. Viola, the brakes worked perfect.

Again disclaimer, not a professional mechanic. Just sharing to help with diagnostics and/or push back on the dealer if they can't find the problem.

Thanks for reporting your problem to NHTSA.

FYI, Ended up donating the Trailblazer to an auto repair school and placing my order for the Maverick. Shared the ABS issue with the school and a long list of other problems.

Just off the phone. The service advisor and the tech, to their credit, seemed quite involved. A Ford case number has been issue, for what that’s worth. There were no codes stored. Due to safety, they did escalate. The thought process was a failure in the electronically controlled portion of the brake system and what he referred to as the HBU. Parts have been ordered, but they anticipate having the truck until next week. That’s fine as I don’t feel comfortable driving it at this point until I’m certain it’s been resolved.

I'm glad you heard back from them.

This is why I'm not 100% in favor of electronically controlled - well, anything. I mean, yes, it's treat when everything works, but if there's a malfunction, then a stout stomp on the brake pedal ought to bypass all the electronics and put pressure to the caliper cylinders.

Ditto the parking brake - it should be fully manual, with no interference from any electronic module.

All that said, glad you're safe. I'll keep tabs on this thread to see what is found out.
