Be aware of this when you buy the Hybrid. At some point the lifters may need replacement if there is a problem. There is no adjustment. A super expensive cost due to tear down.

Called , Direct-Acting Mechanical Bucket Lifters. (DAMB) For damn expensive! Had I known at the time of purchase I would have passed. What about you?
Yup, Ford and Toyota have been using it for years (probably decades?). Nothing new. I'm struggling to remember even a single case of a vehicle needing just a lifter adjustment. Yes a valve clearance job on a vehicle with buckets is a lot more involved than, say, a Honda with solid lifters but adjustment screws instead of buckets.

But realistically, the lifters shouldn't need adjustment unless something catastrophic is looming (like sludge from not changing the oil on time and excessive metal-on-metal contact because of that).

These are scare tactics!
What makes them any worse than any other type lifter? The newer Toyota hybrids moved to roller lifters for efficiency, not reliability, although roller lifters tend to be more reliable at high RPM which hybrids don't usually see. They used them for many years with little problem. I'm sure roller lifters can fail as can regular hydraulic lifters. I don't believe the replacement frequency is significantly different from one type to the other. If they typically go the life of the vehicle why would it matter? Ford has been using them since the 2010 Fusion. Just my opinion until a real issue is discovered.

The Sky is Falling. Hand wringing over that and also the carbon buildup on the EB is ridiculous. With proper maintenance of todays modern engines, several hundred thousand miles without issue is common. If you scared or worried, there's options out there that you could trade it in on that "might" be a better fit for you.
I didn't realize the sky is falling. Have fun with what doesn't bother you. If you can't make comments a Blue Oval doesn't agree with, what use is a Open Forum. I damn well know there are options.

I'm hardly a pure Blue Oval fan, our second Pruis that is now 11 years old is in the carport next to my Maverick. I must admit I never gave the type of valve lifter either had a second thought and now that I've done the research I can see I never had to. It would be good to let us know about this, but I think the alarmism is very much overblown given the reliability of these engines.

My 1977 Yamaha street bike had bucket shims. A non issue IMHO. Many possibilities exist in all things in life so choose your worries, or battles, as you see fit and move on.

One option is to add a can or two of the old STP oil additive that Richard Petty used to endorse! 🤣 (not quite sure if they still make it tho) .

Don't tell the op it's unibody construction too 🤯
.. and blowout prone radial tires instead of safe crossply with tubes. Experimental disk brakes instead of well proven drums, and oh lordy lordy they even replaced the windshield wiper vacuum servo with an electric motor.

...Or solid lifters with an adjustment screw that you have to do every 60k or more often if they loosen up.
Hey, don't knock it (excuse the pun). I was more technical (computers), but I loved opening up the valve cover on my '83 Nissan and tweaking the valve clearance then advancing the timing just enough to squeeze out a few more horsepower but keep it purring.

I had a car that needed it frequently, and I begrudged it the $10 valve cover gasket every time (Before those viton reusable ones) the only part that was fun about it, was checking I could hit 72mph in 2nd gear to know I did it right.

The 2.5 uses a "shim and bucket" valve train.
The Fiat SOHC and DOHC engines of the 60's thru 80's had bucket tappets with interchangeable shims as well which were easy to service and had far less parts than any rocker arm/push rod style engine. And before you say, "Fix it again, Tony," the valve trains weren't the problem with these engines, it was American owners who ignored the maintenance schedule to get the timing belt changed, something no more difficult than a serpentine belt replacement.

It would be an issue if the hybrid saw a life on track, but thats about it. I remember the old Taurus SHO with the Yamaha 3.0 and 3.2. With how those were driven you definitely had to check valve clearance and shim as needed every 60k or so.

With modern oils especially I wouldn't sweat it.

Same with my various Plymouth Duster, Dodge Darts I drove with leaning power slant six. I buy one back in the day for few hundred dollars take the valve cover off adjust the valves with solid lifters, change the oil and make people think I had a V8 because they did not hear the slant six tick that almost all of them had.
