Trying to find out what’s the best fuel to use in my Maverick with 2.0 EcoBoost/AWD that will yield the cheapest cost per mile for commuting back and forth to work. My commutes 31-34 miles one-way depending on which route I take and it’s roughly 18 miles highway and the rest rural and urban mix. For the longest time I’ve been running regular (87 octane) from BJ’s wholesale club and getting about 24.5-24.8 mpg at the pump each week. Recently I’ve been tapping a Shell down the road with some nitro 93 and I’m getting a smokin 29-30mpg average at the pump. It’s at a much higher cost per gallon but man doesn’t my truck love it. I did try BJ’s premium which yielded roughly 25-26 average mpg’s at the pump. I’ve noticed with BJs gas, my engine’s rather noisy. Turns out they don’t have any detergents in their fuels, hence why they can sell so cheap. Anyone found the fuel that yields the best mpg’s at the lowest cost per mile? I’m thinking about trying the lower end Shell and Irving fuels again because those have detergent and are also a good bit cheaper than Nitro 93.

Driving style will dictate efficiency more than gas type.

I’m sure there is a difference in quality/efficiency of fuels on a local level. The only way that I have ever learned about this is by contacting and understanding the petroleum distribution companies in your area.

I’m not sure that we will ever be able to fully understand the best options because of this variability.

It seems like you are concerned with both cost and efficiency. In my experience, you sort of pick one. Not sure there is a magic bullet here. Best of luck.

Curious to see other responses here 😏

If you're just talking about the cheapest cost per mile to commute, then 87 octane is the winner. If you are towing a trailer in high heat or at altitude, you may do better with premium. Either way, utilize a top tier fuel for best results, and your engine will thank you ;)

The question is what is the price difference per each and if you could in theory overfill your tank so you could travel the same mileage on 87 vs 93 then what is the real price difference per mile?

As far as running the ecoboost at it's most efficient point regardless of fuel is driving around 55 MPH or less with minimal stop and go in eco mode with the climate control system off. On really long runs of 60+ miles I can get up to 42.5 MPG this way. 60 - 65 MPH I can average at least 34 - 36 MPG for those trips. Overall is usually less when you factor in local driving which I still get anywhere between 30 - 34 MPG for a whole tank of gas.

Ford recommends Top Tier branded gas. Any of the big refiners like sunoco, conoco, exxon, etc. will brand their gas Top Tier. It's about the detergent package to prevent carbon buildup on DI engines or so I heard.

I think your truck is telling you that she doesn't like BJ gas, regular or premium.

I think your truck is telling you that she likes Shell premium.

Listen to your truck.

Have you tried the Shell 87 for comparison? It is still Top Tier and has the detergents / additives to qualify. Might be the middle ground between the two extremes you're trying - getting a Top Tier fuel at a lower cost than premium. You might find a payoff for a little more cost but better performance, and possibly better engine health long term.

Not yet but I’m going to next fill-up. I’m thinking the exact same thing.

I run 91 in it. I don't even look anymore when I fill up. Its just to depressing no matter what grade. I know I know that's what I get for living in Calif.

Same here, premium 5.79+ per gallon 91 octane top-tier fuels I get the best from Chevron gas is my first choice, then Shell, town driving strong 25.7 mpg freeway 30 mpg, found that 58 mph puts my truck in 8th gear and 1500rpm 60miles stay the same 65 rpm goes just under 2000 rpm, 70- 85 mph rpm stays at 2000 rpm, (I have not been faster then 88mph)12,475 miles in 7 months still going Great, and still love this truck, 2023 Eco-boost AWD XLT Tremor model.

I have been using premium fuel with no ethanol. 91 octane. I believe premium is recommended by ford because of the turbo. I’m getting 30-32 mpg. Mostly hiway. My commute is around 26 miles one way with around 20 of those hiway miles. Truck runs excellent and has plenty of power. I’m very happy with it.

I run premium 95% of the time on the EB AWD, usually from Costco. I can feel the difference in power between regular and premium with the heavy AT tires I run, especially in the heat.

You might check whether the Shell 93 is alcohol-free. That could account for the difference.

Costco premium. In my area it is normally about 10 cents more than regular from Speedway.
