I managed to hit 1,000 miles today and decided to do my first oil change.

After watching Blake's FX4 oil change video, I was curious to see how I could pull the filter without spilling oil on top of the rear skid plate. You can't. Even if the truck were level and on a lift, the oil would still run on top of that skid plate. For reference, here's a pic from directly under the edge of said skid plate:

I can confirm that all of the 13mm bolts (2 on front and 6 on rear skid plate) have threadlocker on them. Interesting to note though... All of the T30 screws for the front plate were able to be taken off, using nothing but the torx bit. No ratchet was necessary. The screws on the bumper side are screwed into plastic, so I understand them not being as tight as the rears, but I could almost remove all of them with only my fingers.

I can also confirm, with only 1,000 miles on the oil, that @FORD BOSS ME was 100% correct about the strong fuel smell present in the oil on these things. I was also amazed at how dirty this oil was, after only 1,000 miles... Whatever oil is put in at the factory also looks like alien blood..

I buttoned everything back up, filled the oil pan with the prescribed amount of oil (5.5qts) and proceeded to run flood mode and fill the filter up. Worked like a charm!

I also got my Fram XG3614 filter today and decided to compare it to a FL-910S..

Looks like I found the right filter for the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 oil that I ordered. It will be here Monday, so I just used Motorcraft oil today..

Strong fuel smell? That can’t be good. Did you idle it before draining? Maybe to warm the oil up?
I’m planning on changing my oil at either 2000 or 3000 miles. Maybe I’ll send an oil sample out to blackstone…

@FORD BOSS ME did a video, explaining why the 10,000 mile OCI isn't a good idea. He pulled some oil from a 2.0 EB engine and was commenting on the fuel smell. I was planning on doing mine at 1,000 and was curious to see what it was like and I found out. It's caused by the turbo boost and the compression, forcing small amounts of the fuel/air mixture past the piston rings and is normal. I get a faint diesel small in the oil of every diesel pickup I've ever owned.. That's high compression...

Also... I always change my oil when it's hot. I had just returned from taking my Father-in-law to the store..

Fuel smell or oil dilution is a common side effect of a direct injection engine. Why I wouldn't go over 5k changes with DI. You can expect it to be normal for all of the eco engines.

Wow I have never seen oil that looked like that... well unless it had water in it. That definitely makes me want to change the oil at 1k miles too when I get my truck.

Does it look like this because Ford puts additives in the Oil for the break in period? I will definetly get mine changed at 1k now!

Gotcha. I’ll have to look for the video when I have time. A UOA is cheap enough. That will shed some light on what’s really in the oil.

THANKS for this thread AND pictures!

I would be a nervous wreck if I saw oil like that coming out of my brand new motor

Did you make sure the gasket came OFF with the filter?
They've been known to stick to the block when over tightened
It's also good to see that Hulk Hogans twin brother is still hand tightening the factory oil filters :D

I did check and clean the filter mount. I should have taken a picture too.. Kind of freaked me out when I saw that the sealing surface was 3/16" larger in diameter, than the filter itself!

The Fram Ultra Filters down to 20microns at 99% efficiency and 15microns at 93% efficiency and 10microns at 74% efficiency

It's a terrific filter and filters better than the OEM one but the oem is the only other I'd use ATM

Yes

Also noted that the FRAM is made in the USA. I like both FRAM and Ford filters though.... both have served us well.
Draining the oil when the color is as shown.... no problem here for that choice. ✔🇺🇸
Happy motoring !
