The way I look at it is the “don’t buy a first year model “ has changed over the years. The quality and pre-engineering is far above past years. Ford, as well as all manufacturers, cannot afford a “dog” to be released with the amount of social media reviews that will take place. I am sure there will be recalls when the real world users show changes needed, but that is also why there is a warrantee. No worries here and a if needed, a brief visit to my close dealer is expected.
I had understood that they could not mark up vehicles that were ordered during the pre-production period, aside from the regular "dealer fee". At least that's what they told me at the dealer. If a buyer backs away from a vehicle ordered, then that's a different story and the dealer can mark it up however they want. Is this correct?

yes, that is correct. Even though the dealer does not 'own' the vehicle, they can sell with any markup they think they can get from a consumer.

Do you know if X plan would work the same way? I've seen some mention of X plan not necessarily being a huge discount from MSRP, but if it also keeps them from tacking on extra fees that would be a big positive.
It does work the same way

If you log into the site where you generate your PIN, theres a Freq. Asked Questions - it gets capped to $100 on doc fees. This is a big deal where I am since that alone saves me $700 (and every dealership here does it, which is why if you don't have a 'plan', you go out of state around here.).

Theoretically scheduling will begin two weeks from today (grain of salt included).

Try here the norm is $1000 and now I've seen places advertise their dealer fee of $1300 on trucks!

Yeah, its getting ridiculous. But this is why X-plan is so beneficial by capping them. Sucks my dealership is trying to get out of honoring X-plan on the Mavericks (point blank told me they are not doing X-plan pricing on it and won't until next year regardless of it being on the partner site today - my Ford rep lost her mind when I told her about that. I've never heard her say the F-word before, and certainly didn't expect her to use it that many times in one sentence either, but she is going to 'address the issue' with them which makes me very happy).

But after this frustration and the Bronco frustration, yeah.. not buying anymore vehicles from them or from any local ones either. WV isn't that far away. Looks like SAG will be my preferred dealership going forward.

When I order my Maverick I wanted FWD and the 4K towing and my dealer showed me that its going to be a late build because of the rear diff
Rear diff? Since when does a front wheel drive have a rear diff?

I was at a local dealer who after telling me they would sell to me at cost to them, which was reducing their ADM down to MSRP still wanted to add $1000 dealer fee!! At another dealer I almost bought a Tacoma but I never could get a price out of them, only a payment and I had to use their financing! I have similar stories using Xplan on a ranger too until I gave up.

Even if In the end after travel and other expenses the price works out the same I would rather go elsewhere.
My Bronco is through SAG and the Mav through Chapman’s. I appreciate straightforwardness and my grand daughter will take the trip and we’ll enjoy the travel memories!

Same story here. The dealer is happy to have my business, but in this case would not be disappointed if I back away. His allocation is only two at this point. They could then mark it up to whatever they could get. That happened with the Japanese imports in the mid 1980's. I remember every Honda had an additional dealer mark up of $500.00 on a hand written window sticker. A significant amount for a $7-8K car.

I am not in a 'must have' situation as I have 3 cars as it is, but it seems some dealerships don't want the interest, sales, or up-front deposits. That baffles me. My local has <10 new vehicles on lot, <60 used less than five years old, and they keep offending people left and right. Why not get the orders and deposits now? Its going to mean sales as those models come in for the new ones, and gets more eyes on the used ones to get movement there, too. Hmm.

I do know after reporting my "we aren't doing X-plan on mavericks" response I got and other coworkers reporting the same from the same dealership, our Ford rep was not happy about that, but she is going to address it. I am waiting for the fallout over that one. (Yes, we are not only a huge company, but a major Ford partner, so Ford takes care of us in a lot of ways, hence why we have a dedicated rep, not just a customer service number that goes to a queue, we have a specific person we work with.)

But that has me wondering, what are dealerships thinking? Not interested in getting those orders and willing to get in trouble with Ford proper, too? It makes no sense to me. Maybe someone can clarify?

A good guess is that the dealer makes little or nothing on the reserved Mavericks, especially since many a discounting something off the MSRP. They will likely be more enthusiastic when the dealers are able to order for themselves. Pricing will likely be much different.
