There have already been plenty of other posts showing alternate oil filters for our Mavericks, but I could not find any pictures with both the Wix and Mobil1 together, so I recently purchased both of these and also an FL-400S for comparison.

I had already installed the FL-910S which is what I had at the time, but the box is almost 3/4” shorter than the FL-400S’ box, and then both the Mobil 1 and Wix are almost 3/4” taller than the FL-400S.

The 400S is the cheapest (Amazon) at $8.44 + tax, and the cheapest I could find for the other two were from Rock Auto, but I ordered two of each (4 total) to average out the cost with tax & shipping to my cost satisfaction.

For me, an added plus with the Mobil 1 & Wix is much easier installation and removal using my strap tool since these two extend lower than both the 910S and 400S (I haven’t tried the 400S yet, but have used the Mobil 1).

so, not being one that's totally mechanically minded, I'm wondering if the added height is good for greater lengths ot time before oil changes or simply offers a greater filtration to the standard oil change intervals?

obviously, we all want our baby trucks to last as long as possible, but of the mobil 1 and wix, which offers greater filtering characteristics compared to the factory/oem filter.

The only impact the longer filters might have is the quality of filtration. There are other time-based reasons to change your oil outside of that, however.

In other words, the schedule put forth by the oil life monitor and owners manual should still be the bare minimum, since it is not solely based on how “clean” the oil is.

One other result that some people find useful is that a longer oil filter increases the overall engine capacity, meaning oil changes might take a round number of quarts (6.0) to refill instead of some kooky fraction. (5.X)

I bought 5 910S filters when they were $3.83 at Walmart. Now they are $8.44, still not bad :)

I used a Baldwin filter for my first oil change.

I've run Baldwin filters ( and CAT filters) for millions of miles on my big diesels...great filters.

I always like the bigger is better approach to filtration.

I have a new bypass filter in stock that I may try on the Maverick...filters down to 1/2 micron.

I also have the filter adaptor to use to make it fit...left over from my racing days.

I've had similar problems over the years, and finally found my salvation in this type of oil filter wrench ($12 on Amazon). Maybe Santa will put one in your stocking if you ask her nicely.

Be wary of auto parts bought on Amazon. I bought an FL-910S filter on there and the filter box printing was really really bad. And the filter openings were different than the Motorcraft I had in the garage. Less openings with different shapes than true OEM Motorcraft filter from walmart. It looked counterfeit and my mechanic agreed. I returned it.

Not saying all filters bought on amazon are counterfeit. Just be careful who you deal with on there.

A bigger filter modifies design. I'm sure you've also ensured that your larger filter matches the OEM filter in filtration efficiency, flow rate, pressure drop and bypass pressure.

Heck many Ford dealers don't install Motorcraft filters on their customer cars.

And I would bet no two brands of filters have the exact same specs as the oem filters.

I have nothing against Motorcraft filters... I have used them on many different vehicles.
But I'm not concerned that one filter may have a 14# bypass valve and another brand will be @17#'s....not a factor.
