Premature rear brake rotor wear

I noticed this morning that both rear brake rotors are wearing, look almost look like metal to metal west but they aren't making noise. I have only 8000 miles on it. Has anyone else experienced premature brake wear?

My brakes moan a bit first thing in the morning when I'm backing out of the driveway, but otherwise look good.

A) What on earth is going on with your wheels, that's some severe dirt/dust/road salt or corrosion!
B) Can you get a photo with the rotor in focus?
C) Can you take off the wheel at some point or use a shop mirror to check the pad thickness?

If the rear is actually wearing that quick, especially in a Hybrid, I would suspect either it's being driven with the electronic parking brake engaged, the parking brake is malfunctioning, or some particle got lodged between the pad and rotor to gouge it.

A. That's road salt. It snowed here last night and, with a high temp of 25 today I wasn't going to wash it, especially since we are expecting a foot of snow Saturday. It washes right off, not corrosion.
B. I'll try later.
C. That's on the agenda for tomorrow when I can pull it into my garage.

Im the only person that has driven the truck and I've never used the parking brake, not even once. The other rear rotor looks the same. I've also only driven the truck on paved roads.

While traditionally front brakes wear faster, I’ve read that some modern cars have more wear on the rear. Due to various traction control systems. Not saying that’s the issue, so a good diagnosis hopefully sorts this out.

interesting. as we all know hybrids use regen instead of brakes at times. is it possible that they apply some rear brake to maintain car balance hence wearing rears faster than typical cars.

I guess it’s possible, I can’t find more specifics on line. If it was an issue though I’d say we’d all be having this serious wear.

I would go to Ford, and have them look at it. If nothing seems wrong, have them make a note on your record that is was a concern. Rear brakes usually last longer the front brakes (3X longer) , that's why they are smaller in size.

Yes! My dealership just told me that my rear brakes and rotors need to be replaced. They sent me a picture, and they are all rusted and worn. I only have 40,000 kms and have been off work the past 7 months. I've had a few new vehicles including a 2010 Ford Ranger and didn't go thru them this fast! Guess if you buy cheap, you get cheap! Although I do love my truck!

Hey there I am in Canada and I have the same thing going on dealer said not to worry about it but it just does not look nice you know what I mean breaking still fantastic , I guess I could update rotors in the future!

That’s a great point, could this be true? I never use the auto hold feature but many here do.

...I've never used the parking brake, not even once...

If you've ever parked on an incline at all, you've used the parking brake. It auto-engages whenever you park on an incline. Then dis-engages when you start to drive away. If it's working properly.

The blurry picture doesn't say much, afa pad wear goes. But the Hybrid brake pads should usually be serviceable for many 10s of thousands of miles. Some Escape Hybrids have logged over 200k miles before needing brake pad replaced.

Take it in and have it inspected by your dealer.

There is auto-hold that lets you take your foot off the brake at a red light. And there's hill hold, which keeps you from rolling back, when stopped going up a steep hill and you take your foot off the brake and hit the go pedal to proceed.
