Like many of you, I was excited to mod my mav. I have done a lot of things, and I owe all of you a writeup of my rig with pictures and links. One of those mods was a stubby (or at least the Autozone knockoff).

Sadly, the reception of one of the better radio stations in my area truly went downhill, and there were times the static was so bad, I had to find a different station.

So, recently, I realized I donned the stubby, and that might have been my problem. I put the original Maverick RC antenna back on, and… my station was back! I went for a long drive, and listened to such classics as ā€œFat Bottomed Girlsā€. It was a nice evening.

I can’t go back to the stubby.

Yeah those antennas are horrible if you listen to FM/AM stations. I had one on my F-150 and the reception was crap, went back to the long oem antenna.

Yeah the antenna thing is so silly to me. If I were to bother to change the antenna it would be to use a bigger better one.

I listen to AM 1120 on my way to and from work. The maybe 11" antenna is already horrible for reception.

I haven't listened to radio (am or fm) in my cars for nearly 10 years. Got sick of hearing the same commercials every 3-1/2 minutes. Got sick of hearing music that I don't like. I stream all my music.

But it LOOKS better. 🤣

The stubby is only to use the roof rack, IMO. I kept it on because I'm 95% streaming and too lazy to switch it out each time I want to put a board on the roof. Certainly I knew it was a downgrade going into it.

What is this AM/FM you are speaking of old timer? Time to break out the 8 tracks and CDs like my great grandparents used to use!

Just kidding. I am old too. But today’s music sucks. I would rather stream ā€œmellow 80s goldā€ on amazon music.

Normally, at least regarding reception, a longer antenna would be helpful (though a 30-31" whip antenna is generally a good match in relation to the wavelength of the FM radio range, being 1/4 of a wavelength long). But, on my F-150, I ended up getting a shorter antenna so that it would fit in my garage without hitting the door frame. It also hit the ceiling beams in the parking garage downtown. So it was a little tradeoff - gave up having a full 1/4 wavelength antenna so that the truck could be parked in the garage.

With AM radio, ideally, you'd need a much longer antenna. Which isn't really practical. So instead, they "load" the antenna with a tuned coil or loop of some sort to get some reception. But in general, the AM band ideally would work best with an antenna several feet long.

I'm noticing that these Mavericks don't seem to have a regular whip antenna. Guglielmo Marconi would not approve.

I guess if you live in a heavily populated area with strong signals a stubby would be ok. I live in western nowhere New Hampshire. 😜 We usually get 1 or 2 songs tops before having to hunt for another station. With that maybe I need to get a big whip antena so we can get stations longer! 😁
Don't even tell me to streem Sirius. As soon as we get a weak signal, its gone.
Spotify loads a little more ahead and can sometimes keep playing, but only if my phone is up on the dashboard for good signal. šŸ˜‰
Sirius is the only thing I miss about not having a Lariat.

That's what I did, longer & better reception.
