I make a point of asking politely if I can help return their cart for parents and other folks. I've also toned down the confrontational incidents on littering and idiocy...... too a point!

Went to Harbor Freight today and when I came out I saw this. It's a plastic cart so no damage but really, the cart return was right behind me and over a couple of spaces, they were to lazy so just left the cart there.

Not to be pedantic but I think rude is the better term

Try to find one of those spots where one side of your car is next to a curb, but unfortunately the ones where you are least likely to get cart or door dings are also the farthest from the entrances.😱

Tell you what. Our local Shop Rites a grocery chain have the chains that you need to put a quater in to get the cart. You get the quater back when it's returned. It works! I have never seen a cart that was not returned.
I haven't seen that at ShopRite. The only place I've noticed that practice is Aldi

caught some idiot yesterday who had pulled in a parking spot opposite me and was edging closer and closer to my bumper as I was going back to my truck she kept inching closer and closer until it looked like she was actually touching my bumper, she got out of her car and I walked passed her to take a look and saw that she was no more than one inch from my bumper - she saw I was looking and said oh I just wanted to make sure I was fully in the spot and I said to her - hey this lot is pretty much empty you can park anywhere (the rest of the lot was essentially empty) you don't need to come within an inch of my truck and she just wandered away like the dope that she it.

Shows you how old I am. When I was a kid we would return the bottles for the deposit. One place would store the bottles outside. We would grab them and return them again. Pretty sure the owner knew but let us do it anyway.
Same. The bottle shed in back had a hole you could reach through and grab some to return. One 10 cent bottle was good for 2 candy bars!

That's why I aways park far away from any other cars. The average person doesn't give a crap about their car so why would they give even a fraction of a crap about yours.

I think there have always been inconsiderate a-holes, the numbers are just growing with the herd.

This is going to be a mighty frustrating thread 😞

You must be as old as I am. I remember 10 cents for the Saturday matinee and 5 cents each for popcorn and a Coke.
And, yes, a nickle for bottle returns.

I'll also make a counter point here I've made in other threads. Considering the nature of their use, our car culture of wanting pristine metal exteriors shined up like jewelry is counter intuitive.
- Hurdling down the road at high speed
- Parking lots
- Parking garages, even worse at cramming you in too close. Even normal people have to do limbo to get out carefully
- Being outdoors a lot, hail, falling debris

It's way more practical and realistic to expect some wear and tear, dings etc. Trying to maintain the perfect exterior is futile and to a degree, dare I say vane. Think about other things in harsh use environments like shoes. More are now built to cover up scuffs etc than in the past. Outside of few dress circumstances most people realize shining shoes isn't productive considering their use.

Saturn was on to something, but people associate plastic with "cheap" and we seem to find a way to turn things into status symbols.
