Hybrid 2.5L oil requires spec of WSS-M2C962-A1. Known ones are:
It's also possible an ILSAC GF-6 rating would be OK, but I cannot completely confirm that. Of note, Pennzoil's best oil, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, does not have the Ford WSS-M2C962-A1 rating. I confirmed with Shell that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum does have the WSS-M2C962-A1 rating but their data sheet hasn't been updated. As of 08/2025, Ultra Platinum dose now list the Hybrid spec as complying.

Someone on BITOG did oil changes using Motorcraft 0W-20 and Motorcraft filter and wear/sample was excellent. I may just stick to Motorcraft oil from factory since I only do it once a year, although it is rather pricey, and I was wondering if there was a better non-OEM oil to choose.

I did my first oil change on my 2023 XLT hybrid at 2500 miles using Motorcraft. I did my second oil change at 6000 miles and used Mobil 1 hybrid. I've used Mobil 1 on all my cars for many years, feel confident using that on the hybrid.
If I had an Ecoboost I would use Motorcraft since WalMart carries it at a good price.
I picked up 4 Motorcraft 910S filters for $3.98 each at Walmart a while back. They are now $8.84 which still isn't too bad.

Can you believe how much oil has gone up! Just a couple years ago I bought 3 oil changes of 5 qts full synthetic and a wix filter for $18 ea. @ pep boys. My first change on mav EB was $57. Admittedly it was Mobil one, six qts and a Mobil one filter.

Valvoline Advanced and Pennzoil Platinum exclusively for me. I love how 5 qts isn't enough so you have to pay an extra $10 for 1 qt.

Walmart has "Mobil 1 Hybrid Full Synthetic Motor Oil 0W-20, 5 Quart" $25.97 that is a great deal, Rural King has Motorcraft FL-910s filter $5.99.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum isn't listed because they sell less of it and don't pay for some of the testings to meet certain certifications, but it's the same as Pennzoil Platinum with a higher additive pack if anyone is wondering. Better for "high performance" stuff, or turbo's etc etc... I don't currently have a Hybrid but I've used it exclusively for the past 5 years.

It's the same with Amsoil. They pay for some tests but not always the certifications for every brand of vehicle that has those testers in their pockets. Amsoil also makes a Hybrid specific oil and I believe there was a post about it here once before. So if you are partial to Amsoil, you are g2g.

Just keep in mind that under warranty, they will likely test to see if it meets or exceeds said spec should an issue arise if you are doing your own changes. I think honestly you'd be hard pressed to find an oil that doesn't meet or exceed FORD's specific labeling. Do with that info what you will. When in doubt, better safe than sorry. You are not going to notice any major difference most times.

Added thank you

Of interest, it notes that WSS-M2C962-A1 is compatible with WSS-M2C947-A1/B1, which Penzoil Ultra Platinum lists as being good for. So, it's possible Penzoil Ultra Platinum is OK for our engines. I really don't know. Why I wonder is because it's such a good oil.

I don't believe PUP is the same as PP. Project Farm tested them and PUP is definitely different with a different additive package.

Are They All The Same Motor Oil? Let's Settle This! Four Levels of Pennzoil Motor Oil Compared (youtube.com)

I'm writing to Pennzoil, hopefully they can offer some suggestions. But the PP is still an excellent oil using the GTL clean oil tech. But, the Motorcraft 0W-20 and Motorcraft filer on the hybrid Escape wear on BITOG really looked good, and for warranty purposes it'd be a lock for using it.

The bigger thing I'm learning is that fuel dilution readily contributes to wear. Even a 5% dilution is huge. So, depending on driving style/conditions (ie lots of short trips) it makes more sense to use less expensive oil more often.

You caught my post before I edited it ;)
Just more additives. 90% of applications are not worth spending the extra loot on PUP especially in the 2.5L's here.

I think you are correct, using any of the above oil at a normal interval for driving conditions will offer long term protection of the engine where it will outlive the other useful parts of the truck. I'm more concerned about warranty for "just in case".

I'll stick with my supertech full synthetic
Supertech Full Synthetic is good stuff. I've used it in my daily drivers for years along with the manufacturers oil filters. Use a high quality filter and keep to a regular oil change interval and you should be fine.

I went down the rabbit hole a couple weeks back.
Added a note to my Mav spreadsheet that Costco Kirkland 0w20 was A-OK.
Warren Manu. "recommends" it for the spec. That's good enough for me.

That Havoline is a good price, too and 6qts. Maybe I'll go down that route. I love how NOT often I even have to change this oil. Maybe once a year, it seems. Still not there yet.

From everything I’ve read Costco, Amazon, and Supertech are all the same oil made by Warren. People have even done oil analysis on the new oil and the additive packages are the same.
