Michigan is roughly 9 out of 10 vehicles the big 3....I once had some hillbilly with motor, muffler, carb stickers all over his rear window flip me the bird in my electric car... Michigan, motor city...very anti electric/hybrid. oh well...

Most EV users are urban center folks that can benefit from relatively short hauls where the battery driven units do best......now down here in the SOUTH where folks like to spread out and city driving is secondary to open country long hauls, these EV units are near useless....we do not have the time/patients to wait on old SPARKY to get a full can so we can go somewhere, and that will likely be the case no matter what ! AND as for hybrid...........you have TWO propulsion systems to maintain and thats pure dumb thinking as it is expensive enough to maintain the one (ICE) ! AMEN....

The thread title is misleading IMHO because the Tonka truck idiots aren't gearheads as I understand it.

Being a gearhead myself I always appreciated vehicles like the Mav. The Mitsu Starion Turbo and Buick GN were coming on strong when I was street racing in the 80s and I respected them.

All real gearhead trucks were lowered and built to be fast or handle good vs jacked up with tires sticking out. Those were redneck hicks in the 80s but are just douchenozzle bros now.

They hate it because it is what it is. It's a basic means of transportation that they can't modify! Hybrids have a eCVT, they have no idea what that is, the eco boast is a 4 cyl economy engine that needs no help from them to do it's job!

It's funny you say that I was working it with a guy who has a 1-ton diesel Denali and he's very traditional regarding vehicles and I was explaining to him a little bit of how the hybrid worked and he actually found it pretty fascinating. You know then no accessory belts, the way the battery recharges and it doesn't use the brakes as much etc. So maybe there is hope

I found this thread an interesting read to say the least....I teach auto tech at the local CC and 40-50% of my students are gearheads of some sort. In this part of CA-Central Valley Modesto where the American Graffiti was based, we have Graffiti Week with some serious $$$ cars but my students usually can't afford anything old/classic. So later model Mustangs, Camaros, Hondas, short bed single cab pickups and a surprising amount of G-37 Infinitys are their hotrod cars of choice. Unfortunately we have no shortage here of enormous lifted trucks with the wheels sticking out 6 inches rolling coal on people.

When I told my students I was planning on selling my Avalanche and getting a Maverick they were pretty open minded and once I explained what you can do with the ecoboost motor they seemed impressed. Talking about turbos and added power always wakes them up after boring them about emission control systems.

I have only had one Lifted Truck in class so far and the student said he got "such a great deal" so he had to buy it was planning to fix it and flip it. I asked did he buy it from a short white guy? He said how did you know laughing.....I replied that just the Brodozer truck demographic has sort of a stereotype. Unfortunately the lift was of the cheap and sketchy type and he had about 2 inches of play in the front suspension laterally and vertically. Also this was on a 2 wheel drive?! We watched some internet Death Wobble videos and wheel spacer fails as part of the class and I advised him to repair/replace the front lift spacers and wheel spacers before he had a catastrophic failure. Once we figured out how much it would cost to make the truck right/safe $5-8k he decided to just get the various warning lights turned off and sell it.

I am building a resto-mod 66 Nova that I use pictures of the progress as a little bit of the curriculum. Many young people are still interested in the classic muscle cars but unless but the State of California makes the smog exemption past 1975 to 1985-90 they will be priced out. I'm very envious of states where the smog police are not so intrusive and you can still do fun engine swaps.

I think you may have misread my post. The Mustang Mach-E is the electric Mustang. There are no turbos or intake manifolds. It also sports four doors and has a hatchback.

I live in Michigan...tons of car cruises, shows...when I go to them...NOT showing my maverick or anything, just driving it there and parking...Why oh why do all the gear heads HATE the maverick....? They all have the small peter syndrome and drive giant beefed up trucks...the haters are just ALL OVER against the maverick. I love the bugger, everything about it...but god almighty, the assholes out there that bad mouth it...they can't even contain their hatred in your presence. ok...rant over.

Maybe you are going to the wrong car shows. Real 'transportation' fans are interested in anything mechanical. They may not like everything, but everything is interesting.

Same with the Central Valley of CA...some of the worst air quality in the state still. However I personally think banning the bazillion 2 stroke and gas powered mowers and blowers that the mow and blow lawn services use which are everywhere I have lived in California would make a big dent in the overall pollution. Most people have very small yards compared to other areas and could get by with an electric mower/blower/weed wacker. Same with some of the 40-60 yo Ag equipment we have. Also cracking down on the modded for rolling coal diesels would have an impact. The CARB referee station is on the MJC campus next to our shop and we see tons of gas cars in there but very few diesels.

At MJC we have a full EV converted S-10 chevy truck and are introducing hybrid and EV classes. Kids just like to go fast and look cool and in my opinion are more open to new technology than my demographic. Check Tim Allen's electric hotrod being built....crazy fast and cool indeed IMO.

Boring car but dead reliable and cheap to own. I took a ride in a Tesla Plaid and that was the hardest accelerating vehicle I have ever experienced.

I imagine the vast majority of homeowners are purchasing battery powered leaf blowers and the 2 strokes are for landscapers

Yeah in my mind a plugin-hybrid is the best of both worlds. Decent EV range for around town and short commutes coupled with zero range anxiety for longer trips.

EV's have wicked fast acceleration. Eats the battery if overdone though!

There is a shop near London that does full-on EV converts for vintage European cars even as far as making the motors under the hood look authentic. They apparently stay really busy.
