Why are people ordering 2024 trucks if they already have a 2022? Help me understand this.
I mean, if I had the kind of money where buying a new vehicle every other year didn't impact our finances, I'd probably do that too. Though that's assuming it's a better vehicles, so in this case....

This'll sound way snarkier than intended, but didn't you know all this when the order was placed?
It's a reasonable question. I understand personal situations are ever changing and there are valid reasons you would not take delivery.
Problem is people are ordering trucks like it's try before you buy at Amazon. It's just going to impact the dealers cost structure and cost will be passed on to everyone.

I totally agree. I ordered a 23 XLT Lux cp360 hybrid in February and cancelled my now-rolled-over for $4500 more 24 after exactly a year of waiting. The much more expensive 24 was losing critical snowbelt safety features like the heated wipers and side mirrors, the SIBL and the absolute must-have rear window, lost the colour that I wanted and it was becoming a terrible deal. Instead I picked up a virtually-new 23 Lariat for the same money as the XLT and that had not even had its first oil change yet. Two months in, it still seems like an excellent purchase that is constantly exceeding my expectations. Its the only model available with Michelins, and they're my go-to tire company. I didn't know that I absolutely needed the Lariat's power rear window until I had it, as you can't reach that far back to open it manually. Having the magnetic phone charger is also nice. Ford, get your act together and stop bundling weird options together as mandatory.

...Wonder if rollovers will get price protection on a refresh?
Rollovers to the next MY do not get Price Protection - they sometimes get a Private Offer from Ford, which often does not cover all the price increase from one MY to the next .

When you order a truck and the price goes up before it gets built within the same model year, you may get Price Protection; which guarantees you get the sticker price based on the date of order. Price Protection varies by dealer. Whether they honor it is up to them. So it's important to find out before you place your order.

The 2022s had the most options available and then they removed some each year (except for the XL). Wait to see how the 25s are. If the 25s have a lot of nice improvements I might trade my 22 in.
Even the 2022 XL had sunroof, sliding rear window, inverter and color options no longer available. It did gain standard cruise in 2023 though.

I am an ecoboost owner, a FX4 - XLT. I wanted a 23 hybrid, but the order books were closed. So I placed my first 24 order on August 1, 2023. I didn't like the game we were forced to play. I then ordered a number of 24 year model Lariat Hybrids from different dealers. One dealer in particular wanted me to order 3 knowing that I wouldn't be buying more than one. Ford plays games with them and they want units in stock to sell to walk in people. The wait times were atrocious.

So my reaction was to really study want I wanted and begin to look around for it as many people who ordered declined to buy. So I figured if I could find a rig that I would like for MSRP, then maybe I would buy it.

So, what did I really want? I am not a big fan of pure EV, or even hybrids. I bought my wife a Toyota Rav4 PHEV Prime. This vehicle has been a gem. 99 miles per gallon of purchased gas and an EV range of 48 miles before recharge (even longer if driving in city). She only runs it in Hybrid mode (mostly gas engine) when she is on the highway.

With all that said, I really would like Ford to stop messing around with their marketing that really is interested in trying to convince people as to what they should buy based on what they want to build. I do not see a customer orientation at all. Yes they need to make money, but me the consumer do not have the options that I would like to choose from that they know how to provide.

As time went on, I got increasingly alarmed by all the issues with the hybrid. After building Escapes, etc. for years, they know hybrids, but still can't build a new model so that they are reliable.

I ended up buying a 24 XLT FX4, 4K Tow, LUX, Co-Pilot, and (of course) AWD. I am getting an average of 27 MPG (33 on HWG and about 25 in city). As an engineer, I looked under both models from a mechanical perspective. The hybrid is totally inferior to the FX4 from a chassis robustness perspective and they wanted me to pay $1500 more for the hybrid which went a long way to help pay for the AWD components of this vehicle. The recalls and problems are about 4 X greater with the hybrid, which should be an embarrassment to Ford. I commend them for their boldness in introducing an "affordable" small truck again, which met my needs at this time.

I will put an order in for a 2025 if they offer a PHEV, AWD XLT. Just give me the options, and I will decide what I want. But I don't think that is going to happen. I will be happy with my present Mav for a long time I suspect.

I lucked out on finding a 22 used with only 13K miles, I saw how much the newer years had removed options and really wanted the 22. I'm keeping mine unless the same value/options comes out in 25-26.

Yeah this is the first time ever I've bought a new vehicle. I was out of country when I ordered and hoped it would get built before I got back. LOL. 7 months later (summer 2022) bought a used Civic. I thought a lot about the "what if it ever gets here and we don't like it?" question- we had a refundable deposit so we wouldn't lose anything if we walked away.

But in April 2023 Maverick showed up, we loved it, dealer shenanigans were about what we expected- traded in the Civic and still loving our Mav.

------ ----------- ----------

The whole "making a deal" game with dealerships comes from them trying to to guess customer demand, buying what they think customers will buy, then playing the numbers with manufacturer rebates, tradeins, extras, etc... to make a profit. Just a horrible system.

I was reading about a friend buying a Tesla last week- it was so painless they said they'll never work with a dealership ever again. Which is why dealerships will continue to fight states from any changes from their current system...

I don't understand how any of that applies if they already have one.

If it's just "I want one 2 years newer" then that's fine I'm just wondering if I'm missing something.

Edit: I think what you're saying is that the tight supply and ADM means you can flip the 22 for a 24 at no cost so the answer is just "Because I can" basically.

I too am also wondering about why.

However I did order a 2023 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid when I already had a 2022 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid. My reason is that I needed the trailer hitch that was missing on the 2022.

It was financially beneficial to do so also. Even with the price increase on the 2023 I came out well ahead as I sold the 2022 for $31,404 and only paid $26,068 for it out-the-door including all taxes and fees with no trade-in.

The 2023 has the exact same features as the 2022 with the exception of the added hitch and the removal of the useless manual sliding window. (see signature below).

It took a about a year from ordering the 2023 until delivery but that was not an issue as I had my 2022 to drive since December 2021.

The 2023 cost $28,381 out-the-door including all taxes and fees with no trade-in.

That was a $2,313 price increase over the 2022. However the actual cost was $23,045 to me as I used the $5,336 gain I got from selling the 2022.

The 2022 had a roof issue and around 9,246 miles on it so it was nice to profit on it and get a brand new 2023 with new 3yr bumper-to-bumper warranty and no defects.

Okay, I have to fess up too. I did the same thing - plus more. I bought a '22 XLT Hybrid and liked it so much that I ordered a '23 Hybrid too. Justified it as needing a spare for work. I liked it but ended up selling it to my daughter and ordered a '24 XLT Hybrid. There were some features on the '22 that I wish I had added, like a sunroof and a more appealing color that I put on the '24. The math on the trade-up was pretty simple since I could sell the '22 for about what I paid for it.

I've had the '24 now for 8 weeks and there is less there for sure. All the above cost cutting changes you mentioned are spot on. I still prefer my '22 even though it has 34k miles. Most of all, on the '24 I miss the keyless entry and the SIBL that my '22 has. It did retail for some $5700 more - though I did get a $3200 Ford credit since it was actually a rollover. End result, the '22 will continue to be my daily driver and I am not sure if I will keep this new '24 XLT or not. It is chili pepper red which I think is kinda sharp.

For what it is worth, I also ordered a gas engine Maverick ('23 model). I did not care for the ride after having driven the smooth Hybrid. Not at all. I managed to sell it at a profit so the test paid for itself. It has been a fun ride (pun intended) but my Maverick buying days are behind me. On to the next toy.

I have a 2022 XLT. I recently priced the current model with the same options and it was $7,000 more than I paid. Plus, I got a 1.9% interest rate back then. I'm keeping this baby until they take my keys away from me.
