I drive a 2009 Ford escape hybrid, the ice kicks in upon start and will only stop when the engine has reached its operating temperature regardless of anything else. Once the engine temp gets to where it needs to be it will then cycle on and off, ICE to electric. Hope this helps
Ours did exactly the same. Apparently the programming has changed over the years and they behave a bit differently now.

If you drive them long enough they will. Both cases. It’s just how machinery and batteries work. I’m not ragging on Toyota or Ford but the chances of these systems being trouble free for the next 15 years and 300k miles is almost naught. I’ve read a lot of threads with unrealistic real world expectations. I’m still buying one. 😁
I know this is an Old Post but I think they really thin oil is probably the reason for consumption. I have no problem with the 0 part but the 20 part on the hot end? I think that's there to help with fuel efficiency at the expense of the longevity of some parts.

Pretty much, I'm convinced there isn't much is the way of a winning stock these days, especially with the recession we're in. But I see where you're coming from.
Recession? Unemployment the lowest in my lifetime and I'm 54. The stock market is at all time highs. The reason rates are high is because the economy is too hot ( too many dollars chasing too few goods) . That's liable to cause a recession but we might end up needing one. My retirement account is growing by leaps and bounds.

To add to some good info on here, if you notice when the ICE spools up, you have full MPG’s because the fuel injectors have not been commanded yet.
so there isn’t immediate combustion, the ICE is spun up to proper rpm before fuel and combustion takes place. So, there isn’t any real load on the ICE for a second while the oil pump is pushing that 0W oil around.

Who else is going to have jurisdiction over things like emissions?
If you knew anything about emissions testing you would know it's pretty hard to do with measuring tail pipe emissions.

Why? Do you mean regarding something like a hybrid where it might be running on battery some at a time? Either way it's kind of moot to my point. If you're going to have any kind of emissions test who else would decide the criteria other than the government? Where I live the test is done by a private garage not the government they just set the regs.

I am not going to put 30 into an engine designed for 20 because it might not or take too long to get there!

I understand where you're coming from. I would like somebody to do it as a test though, maybe not my own engine though ,I'm willing to bet that the tolerance is in the 2.5 are not any tighter than Ford's standard design and engineering. I don't want to go all tin foil hat but I think they're sacrificing longevity for mileage ratings. Maybe somebody smarter than me has info on the subject

I'm always open to learning so when you get a chance if you don't mind could you tell me why it's hard to do that and what method is better? Thanks

I meant without tailpipe emissions numbers. I don’t think the EPA is going to take a vehicle manufacturers word for how clean their engines are. Way too many have gotten caught (AMC, Mack, VW) in the past to trust their numbers.

Hi Guys. Finally decided to register because I have a question.
My understanding is that the ICE does not kick in until x mph. I don't know the exact speed but when it does kick in, let's say rpm starts above 1500 i guess and on a cold start with the all the oil still at the bottom, doesn't that cause major wear and tear on the engine?
Hoping you guys could explain because I have no idea how it works.
0W20 almost flows like water. Also. the ICE engine is not speed dependent. At freezing temps the engine will start as soon as the key is turned, or button pressed to warm the systems. It's the same as every other vehicle, but the Hybrids have freer flowing oil.

For those of you that are concerned about the oil being too thin , you might want to watch this before you say a lot lol . The new 0W-8 oil is on it's way .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sALAUhldASc

Yeah that's for a Toyota though. Not a Ford lol. But he did seem to say that the oil tested fine with advanced additives in it. Which I'm sure it would have. But it makes you wonder what would a 0w30 do with the same additives

Everyone has their own opinion. Personally I don't have an issue with the 0w when cold it's the 8w when hot:
