It's not a design error, it's an EVAP error. You topping it off isn't solving the actual problem. Replace the problem part causing the issue and you won't have to top it off. You probably just made it worse by ignoring it.
Naw.
If you owned one, you'd know better.
If you read the Toyota blogs, you'd know better.
If you watched some news channels you'd have seen the news stories and have known better.

Free redesigned tank on Toyota in select models if you complain. Or you can fill super slow those last 3.5 gallons. Sometimes 4.

No codes. No evap issues. Just a mis-formed tank apparently.

Thanks for trying to be helpful.

My wife and i drove our Mavericks to get gas. I folliwed her out of the gas station and for a few miles I noticed a little gas spilling from under the spout area. It stopped shortly. Not topping off anymore with this no gas cap thing! TM
I’ll add this. I got my hybrid down to 2 miles to empty on the display and then filled it. It stopped pumping it around 13 gallons and I was able to get it up to 14.9 which probably wasn’t a good idea, but I didn’t notice any surging out because I invested a dollar in one of those little plasticpropane tank covers to prevent any from leaking out I’m never gonna top it off again, but there is almost 15 gallons of storage somewhere available in that tank probably not good to test it out

There's 16.5 gallons of physical tank in the hybrid. Of that, the COMPUTER uses 13.8 for computing your "range".

There is "reserve" fuel you can use at your own risk beyond the 13.8.

You can reliably use 13.8 each time.
You can reliably run to MTE 0 each time. 13.8 is an imaginary point.

Ford is guaranteeing you can drive 13.8 gallons worth of miles. Is anyone going to complain if it turns out to be a little more???

One squeeze I think would be fine, just not repeated over and over. The tank needs some airspace for the fuel tank evaporative emissions solenoid to work properly. Overfilling can allow fuel to enter it, which then usually requires a fairly costly and unnecessary replacement.
Wait… are you saying that not everything can be reduced to a “one size fits all” solution?

I realize this is the Internet and all, but…

I'd be happy to know what "topping off" is supposed to achieve? It certainly doesn't save you any money. Anyone?......
I always thought topping off originated way back when most people paid cash when they got gas.
When the pump shut off you would try and squeeze more in so the amount due would be an even number and you wouldn’t have to deal with coins
For example ,try to make it stop at $15.00 instead of $14.76 etc.

That could have been an extra 1/2 gallon!

Also topping off can ruin your evap canister. I was doing that on a car til the CEL came on. Pain in the butt to get to and swap it out.
As others say….Yes, read the manual.

Poor design. Design error.

There should be no way to "damage" a vehicle by putting gasoline into the hole designated for adding gasoline.

It's like saying "make sure you don't run the alternator more than 30 minutes a day, or you'll risk damaging your battery by filling it up."

Well certain things have to be at certain levels right.
Trans fluid
Diff fluid
Brake fluid
Coolant
Yes they are designed to be filled but to levels that are acceptable as to not cause issues.
But hey, to each his own and experience is a great teacher.
Cheers

Never top off the tank in any vehicle, theres a hose at the filler at the neck that runs down to a carbon filter that traps gases and when you fill to the brim it fills that filter with fuel.

Just set the slowest setting then stand there and watch the free show.
Here’s an example: Some gas pumps deliver gas at a much higher rate than others. When gassing up at one of those pumps, I give it another squeeze after the first “click-off.” If I didn’t, I’d end up with a 3/4 full tank. When the pump delivers gas at a slower rate, I don’t top off. Because my tank is full.
This is why I usually only fill at the fast rate for the first half of what I expect it to take, then change to the slowest fill rate 'til it clicks. @TOMCATFIGHTER's advice is good if you have the time.
