WARNING! I know this is a ‘Land Mine Issue’… Which motor oil to use for ’24 Hybrid?

I have a ’17 C Max, I bought new, that I am now trading for my ’24 Iconic Hybrid Lariat that has just arrived. I am a huge proponent of preventative maintenance, and I keep highly detailed records for my vehicles. I live in Clearwater, FL, and have always had my vehicle maintained at dealership but have conflicting information as to whether a full synthetic or the blend is best for my vehicle.

Research for oil changes is not so definitive here. I’ve always believed Synthetic is the better way to go if its within one’s budget.

From what I’ve seen, the verbiage in the Owners Manual is not specific. But I did notice the ‘part number’ for the oil is: WSS-M2C962-A1

This Part No is attached to the Motorcraft Full Synthetic 0W20 motor oil. I am taking that to mean Ford is calling for a Full Synthetic motor oil in the ’24 Maverick Hybrid.

Am I wrong?

The 0-20W full synthetic is the recommended yes. Some dealers will put in the synthetic blend 5-20W if you do not pay for the upgrade to full synthetic though, so make sure to check when you take it in what they are using.

I work for a Ford dealer and we always put 0w20 synthetic in the hybrid Mavericks. I actually buy Valvoline Hybrid specific oil for mine that is supposed to keep moisture in suspension more so than regular 0w20. Not sure if it actually does or not, but it makes me feel good.

I would worry less about the brand of oil as long as it's the recommend type and viscosity. I keep my vehicles for a very long time that include several hybrids. Just change the oil every 3k-5k miles or every 6 months. It's cheap insurance and in 50 years of driving I've never had an oil related engine failure. Ignore owners manual recommendations to let it go beyond 5000 miles. If its a turbo I would not let it go beyond 3000 miles.

This is just throwing money down the drain. A 3-5k change on a hybrid likely means much less miles than that given the engine turns off.

3k on an EcoBoost is also way too early. Remember, the vast majority of vehicles that have these engines don't get anything more than oil changes by the oil minder (if that) and they have no major issues in their lifetimes.

Hell, my 2002 Accord recommended 7,500 and that was based on 90s oil technology.

I just did my first oil change (Ford did first one) this is trucks 2nd one. I got cheap all synthetic oil at walmart (Quaker)that had the Ford Specification. Oil minder said 5% life left. Took me a little over an hour using 2 ramps, cardboard to slide on for me and an electric drill for the cover bolts and a torque wrench for the drain plug. I will change again around that 5% next time whenever that happens and continue that practice. To each their own.

Check out a few youtube videos on engines that have gone 7-10K or more between oil changes. They show up as a mechanic replacing an engine. I'll spend the money on the changes it's cheap insurance.

I have always followed the owners manual and have never had an engine failure either.
Motor oils of today are amazing compared to the good ol' days.

I've put about 10,000 miles on my maverick hybrid using Castrol Edge 0w-20. Never done an oil change on my own vehicle, but it takes about 30 minutes. My old mechanic buddy always used castrol, and I put over 250k on the civic he worked on, so i just stuck with the brand I saw work.

A true land mine issue, as you say. Some have replied, even in this string, that it’s a waste of money to change oil sooner than recommended by the maintenance minder or mileage/time stated in the owners manual. Others, again even in this string, that 200k plus miles is achieved thru more frequent oil changes. Is either option worthy of back and forth mud slinging? I think not. Let people be to make a choice that suits them!
As for what oil to use, this is my first ever new car. 2022 xl hybrid. For some reason, I have been affected by the naysayers who say American cars/fords suck and will blow up. So I got the extended warranty and payed very close attention to the owners manual for oil choice. 1st change at 5k done by the dealer. No clue what they used. 2 change at 10k done by me. Motorcraft oil filter and Mobil 1 0W-20 fully synthetic. Most importantly, the reason I chose that particular oil is because it’s states right on the bottle that it “meets or exceeds “ the ford spec oil. I’m saving receipts for the first time ever so if the naysayers are right, I can prove I did everything by the book.

...Which motor oil to use for ’24 Hybrid?...
FULL SYNTHETIC 0W-20, per the User Manual.
I buy my own 0W-20 Mobil 1 oil & Motorcraft filter and take it to the trusted local shop I use for oil changes. They charge $29.95 labor, which is well worth the price, considering my age and the hassle of the removing/replacing the cover's multitude of screws.
I keep all receipts.

I don't trust the stealerships in my area to use the oil I want in my truck - even if I provided it. One certainly isn't allowed to watch them do the oil change.

0w-20 full synthetic is what I use, I prefer the Walmart super tech brand, super cheap. I also change the filter every oil change, I find it surprising some people don’t - the motor craft filter is less that $5 at Walmart and Amazon.

Something else to note on the hybrid is that the onboard computer for oil life only counts the miles when the engine is on (makes sense). So in reality you can have 20,000 odometer miles in between changes if 10,000 of those miles were electric. There’s also a 1 year backstop in the computer so if you don’t reach those kinds of miles the oil life will reach 0 around a year
