I'm curious if anybody has applied modifications which consequently increased the oil capacity from 5.5 to an even 6?

From what I've read a larger oil filter doesn't quite get you there.

Edit: this thread is not about the merits of larger oil filters. It's about options to increase capacity from 5.5qt to 6qt solely for convenience.

Ehhhhhhhhhhh........the larger filter gets you there if you really are patient with draining all the old oil. As long as you are comfortable with a very slight overfill. Which I am. I put 6 in mine and it reads ok on the dipstick.

Motorcraft FL400S.

I found the capacity of the FL400S one time on some random seller website, but can't recall at the moment which one it was. But it definitely holds a lot more than the factory filter and the "suggested" replacement filter.

Edit to add: Tons of people talking about this on the Ford Focus Forums. Lots of folks want to go to 6 quarts from 5.5 or 5.7. Seems the consensus is using the FL400S makes 6 quarts totally fine. I know the Maverick isn't the Focus, but it is some data to consider on a model that has been around for a long time with a similar/same stated capacity.

Google "FL400S capacity" to see what I mean.

People can debate the merits of larger filter media but for the purpose of this thread I don't care.

A larger filter may let me put in 6qt instead of 5.5 that's just more convenient when I change the oil not to have a spare half empty container floating around.

A larger filter does add more “filtration area”. There are reports of the different built in bypass PSI rating. Not an expert on this, but could be a question for Ford engineer, to ascertain if a bypass PSI rating a significant impact to any engine lubrication system.

Doing lil bit research, found this:
“The Bypass-Relief-Valve is designed with a preset opening pressure to allow free flow of oil when the filter gets clogged and the lubricant is unable to flow through the filter’s media. Without a bypass valve or if the valve doesn’t open properly, pressure could build up causing the filter to burst and the oil to leak. If the valve opens too soon or too frequently, it will cause contaminated oil to flow into the engine which can accelerate the wear of surfaces. And if the valve opens too late, the flow of oil could get obstructed, resulting in poor lubrication.

This is why the opening pressure is carefully crafted to protect the longevity of your engine.”

I haven’t dived into the difference of bypass pressure between filters, the OEM filter Ford uses vs. the FL400 filter.

I only buy oil in 5 quart jugs, because it's MUCH cheaper, so getting an extra few ounces in is irrelevant. I also don't need an oversized filter, it's not like a meaningful amount of anything gets caught by filters anymore.

But the vehicle calls for 5.5qt, so you're saying you fill it half a quart short?

Why do you think you are smarter than the Ford engineers? Plus, having that extra 1/2 qt is good so you can top off in between oil changes.

I'm looking for convenience, and a personal preference not to store half-empty oil containers. I'd just as well store a full unopened one.

They do it to meet a standard. Anytime you mod your vehicle you are trying to improve on where they stopped. You have a GT500, is it bone stock? I use a wix 51516xp and 6 quarts of oil. Its perfect.
