No way on a full electric. Run heater, lights and tow and see how far you go. I'll keep my 2022 Hybrid XL that gets 47mpg (I also do have a 2024 on order, a 2023 rollover). I still enjoy driving my 1957 Chevy with the 454ci dual quad tunnel ram that gets 6mpg!

And how about all the rolling brownouts already taking place in California?
Lived here more than 40 years.
Never had a single one.
"Sensationalism" at it's best if the flyover states think that.

However, recently, there have been "proactive" power shut offs during high winds. Look what happened to Maui when they left the power on in high winds.

I don’t live in California, so what they do there isn’t relevant. Where I live there are very few charging stations. I know of only one here in WM and that’s at my local dealership. It looks little more than an extension cord poked through a hole in the side of the building.
Sucks to be you I guess.

I'd like a plug-in Mav that does 20-40 miles of fully electric, but ONLY if the increase in MSRP is the same as the EV tax credit. I'm too cheap to overpay for PHEV or EV when a cheaper, efficient hybrid makes more sense.

I did buy a Rav4 Prime before prices got crazy - drove it for 9 months, collected $7500 tax credit and sold it for my OTD price. I knew it would have a better resale vs the cheaper Rav hybrid, so I went for it (rates were also 1.24% then). So I got 'paid' to own it for that amount of time. The thing I hated most - driving a $45k Rav - it wasn't as nice as a $45k vehicle should be, and I didn't want to scratch it! Quick in a straight line - but so rarely used that I don't find that a useful feature.

My $25k XL (OTD prices here) I won't have to worry about! Cheap and efficient. Sign me up.

Prices will come down. No doubt. But will it be in 5 years, 10, or 15.

I have gasoline powered hobbies. Without catalytic converters also. But I don't drive them to work every day. I don't think you do either.

Unreal the cover of HotRod Magazine I'm not sure what I had more of HotRod Magazines or 4Wheeler Magazines I street raced for a few years from like 72 to 75 in Southern California Colorado boulevard Pasadena, E Street route 66 San Bernardino and Pacific Coast highway. Brings back real good memories. Then I bought my first four wheel drive in 75 and got into it real heavy Alot of Fun glamis dunes , Afton canyon dunes , ocotillo Wells , Dumont dunes. Thanks for the flashback of some great memories you take good care of that special 57. 👍👻

At least for cars, the prices did come down already. It's doubtful that it'll come down further, especially with the current Lithium prices:
  • 2023 Kia EV6 MSRP: $48,700
  • 2023 Polestar 2 MSRP: $48,400
  • 2022 Tesla Model 3 MSRP: $43,990
  • 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E MSRP: $46,895
  • 2023 Subaru Solterra MSRP: $44,995
  • 2023 Toyota bZ4x MSRP: $42,000
  • 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 MSRP: $41,450
  • 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 MSRP: $41,230
  • 2023 Kia Niro EV MSRP: $39,450
  • 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric MSRP: $33,550
  • 2023 Mini Cooper SE (Electric Hardtop) MSRP: $29,900
  • 2023 Nissan Leaf MSRP: $28,040
  • 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV MSRP: $27,800
  • 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV MSRP: $26,500
Source

Notice, that there are no EV trucks in this list, their prices generally start around $80 - 90K...

The largest natural reserve of lithium known to mankind is in.... wait for it.... California.

South end: full of lithium.
North end: full of lithium.
Along the Oregon/California/Idaho/Nevada borders.
Sparsely populated areas, where there will be little opposition (always some) to mining.

With the ever increasing probability of $20+ per gallon of gas I am considering anything with at least some electrical capability....I at least do not have to worry about carrying a parka and snow shoes.
$20 gas? Maybe in the 2050's. I'll be dead by then.
