Just curious, if anybody doing any additional protection on their Mavericks?
I don't have my Maverick yet, but where I live, I only lock my current vehicle while I'm in town if I have something of value in it. Otherwise, it's unlocked and the windows are down while parked, if it's hot. I never lock it at home.

I assume I will do the same with my Maverick, when it arrives sometime this month.

Hey Ric
Congrats on your new Mav. I wish you many miles of trouble free enjoyment driving it
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if a thief wants your car it’s gone.
There are two types of car thieves. The first is a joy rider. Someone who gets their kicks out of stealing cars and driving them. For fun or to commit other crimes. If they have any skill at all they will bypass what you have bought and cause a considerable amount of damage doing it. The second kind of thief is a professional. I doubt they want to steal a Mav for the trouble of sending it to Dubai. Not sure there is a whole lot of demand for gas efficient vehicles over there😊. More likely it will be a professional chopper who will steal it take it apart and sell the parts which are in high demand right now in the US and Canada. My guess is parted out a Mav is worth 2 to 3 times its book value. Pro’s just need to open your door get It into neutral and put it on a flat bed. They are not bothering to “hotwire” it.
Thanks and Im looking forward to breaking in the car and get past the 600miles/1000km mark here! Very true what you mentioned as they will just put it on a flat bed and off they go! Im just stocking up any preventative measure like having a steering wheel lock to deter the thieves. Every little thing might help a bit for them to skip your car and go onto the next one. Unfortunately, I can only park my Mav on the driveway so its exposed. I was watching a few clips on stolen cars in Toronto and surrounding areas and they were stating shipping to Africa (Nigera, etc) and they also mentioned Dubai! So I was a little bit surprised with that as well.

Hi Everyone,

Im new to the forum and a 1st time owner with Ford! I picked up my 2023 Hybrid last week and loving it so much! This will be our family car and I have 2 kids. Has anyone heard of any issues with break-ins with Mavericks or stolen Mavericks since its a pretty hot car in the United States and Canada. Today, I decided to order on Amazon a few items. I got a RFID Key Fob Protector, RF Signal Blocking Case-Protection for Car Key Fob. Also, I ordered a steering wheel lock anti-theft called "Stoplock".

Im originally from Toronto, Ontario-Canada area and now living in Ottawa. Just alone in the Toronto and surrounding area, there has been 27,000 stolen cars in 2023. Canada has now been known to be a donor country for stolen cars. The cars get stolen and the thief's take the cars to Montreal port and ship it overseas (Africa, Dubai, etc).

Just curious, if anybody doing any additional protection on their Mavericks? If so, any additional tips for the rest of us? Thanks!

-Ric
Nothing other than locking it and turning on the alarm. All the security items you can put on or in the vehicle won't hold up in the face of a determined thief. Windows can be broken, steering wheel locks can be cut, drilled or picked. Tow trucks and trailers can be used to move them without even entering the vehicle. If someone wants your vehicle they will take it, simple as that. No point in causing more damage in the process than necessary, in the event that it is recoverable.

I doubt there is much, if any, international demand for the Maverick, there are lots of small cheaper pickups outside of the North America already. Add that it's hard enough for owners here to get parts, it would be virtually impossible elsewhere.

Very true! Hopefully, none of us gets robbed!! Being a Maverick owner we just gotta be more alert, be aware with our surroundings and use common sense wherever we go as well. :)
Seems like the crowd for Mavericks is generally older and more sensible anyway, so I'm not too worried. As much as it's "in demand" I don't think it's on the to steal list because it's not high price or flashy as others. So your odds probably the same as your previous car, your just feeling protective because it matters a lot to YOU right now and you're emotionally invested. Just like me spending way too much time on a forum for a truck I don't ever have yet 😉.

The last part you mentioned. Always be safe, aware of your surroundings, and use common sense. If you have any to spare please give to those in need, too many are severely lacking😂.

Is it easy for a thief to just open the door and put a Maverick into neutral?

The exact reasons why I decided to join a forum because sometimes my emotions tend to cloud over my rational thinking!! Its great to have a support group here and people who are quite knowledgable about cars.

Unfortunately, I dont have any spare brain cells to offer and Im severely lacking! But, we do have a spare tire under the Mav! Thanks for your input and its great to have a positive community here. =)

Short story time. My buddy from college bought his dream car. Some kind of 4 speed, older Mercedes. He used the club steering wheel lock, set his emergency brake, turned his wheels and set his alarm. Like he always does. He went into Home Depot, on a weekday, during daylight hours. He was in the store for 20 mins. His car was gone.

6 months later he gets a call from a junkyard in Miami. They found his car. He went down and saw the roof of his old car and the A pillars……nothing else.

If they want the car - they will take the car. The cops speculate that his car was on a ‘top 10 most wanted’ list for car thieves. They used a tow truck with a stolen tag and a fake business name on the side of it.

My anti theft device is a 6 speed manual transmission and I popped off the gear map. The manual makes it so 99% of people under 35 can’t drive it, and removing the map confuses the other 1% so they can’t back out of the spot.

Do you think it is hard? Probably would take the same amount of time as it takes you to unlock it with your key and start it? The real question is do they even need to? A couple of car rollers and a flat bed and it’s gone in 60 seconds.

You could look into installing a kill switch.
People like to latch onto the term because it sounds cool. "Kill switch". What it really means is interrupting (cutting) a specific wire or set of wires. Traditionally, this was the starter wire at the ignition switch or the signal to the fuel pump. My old boss had a neat switch hidden away under the front of the overhead console, so that a small, laminated card (a Jesus picture) inserted under the lip would activate it, thus allowing the car to start.

I was an MECP-certified installer for a few years back in the early 2000s, arguably when theft was much easier since immobilizers were still relatively new. These kill switches were easy to install and effective. On modern cars, I would caution against it. Immobilizers have gotten incredibly effective and electrical systems have grown much, much more complicated and sensitive.

What you should focus more on is theft deterrent, not theft prevention. A kill switch may prevent them from starting the vehicle, but what you really want is to prevent them from having time in the vehicle to be able to start it (and do further damage). You want to alert and be alerted that it's being tampered with. Sires and flashing lights to draw attention, a siren inside the cabin (with a backup battery) to deter spending time inside, and a two-way pager to alert you that a door has been opened or a window shattered.
