this is the second or third fire thread on MTC alone that I've seen state a cold engine fire.
Hopefully the cause is found before this becomes an epidemic, or someone dies from it. Many garages are attached to the house. This could be deadly.

Unfortunate, sorry for the loss of vehicles and damage to the home, thankful no one was injured. As for the many previous posts on here calling out the engine fire recall, currently exposed recalls that relate to fires under hood are not necessarily the only reason a vehicle may catch fire. Many other Ford vehicles have been recalled in the past few years(actually decades) for possible fire concerns, for example there currently is a recall on Lincoln MKC models built between 2015-2019 for a fire under hood that could start while parked caused by a short in the Battery Monitor Sensor circuits(23S28). There is a recall on Ford Expeditions for a fire that could start under hood caused by cooling fan circuitry while parked(22S48) and a blower motor concern that could cause a fire although this is with the vehicle running, still a fire(22S56). Over a decade ago there was an under hood fire recall for a concern with the cruise control deactivation switch on many Ford models for an under-hood fire that could start while parked that affected millions of vehicles.. IN short, there could be a yet uncovered root cause for this fire that may require yet another recall in the future.

100%. Which is why I posted this. It needs to be investigated.

You can note that the thin paint that everyone talks about did not hold up. Just another problem for this great "little" truck!!;)

Not really surprised. We really are playing with fire when it comes to hybrids and electric vehicles. I say that with a Tesla in the garage lol!

From what I’ve read about the Class Action Law Suit: Ford’s written explanation was that the fires mentioned in the suit were after catastrophic engine failures caused the release of oil and fuel into the hot engine compartment. Problems with some of the crank machining. The recall was an attempt to prevent the fires, not to fix the blown engine issue. According to Ford, the blown engines occurred 1.7 times per 1000 vehicles, worldwide. Plus it was not just Mavericks…it was any Ford product with the 2.5 liter engine.

I (truly) don't mean to trigger all the BEV haters and turn this into another BEV love-hate thread. But one thing I'm looking forward to with the arrival of the solid state BEVs later this decade is that solid state batteries simply don't burn (easily). No gasoline tank, and no oxygen-rich battery material to fuel an intense battery fire. Dear haters - note I said "later this decade".

More than a hundred thousand vehicle fires in the USA alone every year will simply vanish as the fleet converts over a few decades. Although I imagine there will still be some smaller fires from various vehicle system lubricants, electric shorts, etc. Just not the kind of fires that immolate the vehicle and any containing structures (or cargo ships).

A point of interest. If you Google "how often do vehicles catch fire in the USA", you find there's quite the online war over what the accurate numbers are. There are a lot of false attributions and unsupported data out there.

Been running two 2015 Honda Accord Hybrids purchased in 2014 for over nine years. Still running like they were new and no flame or fire issues. Same with a 2023 Outlander PHEV that we received in Jan. No flame issues or recalls. And it has a 20kwh battery.

yawn

The National Fire Protection Agency estimates that 33 cars catch on fire every hour in the United States alone.
They are rolling bombs with gasoline, diesel and or high voltage batteries. So not surprised.

Yeah, there's nothing combustible in an ICE engine... waitaminute...

Considering how many "fire while parked" issues ICE vehicles of all manufacturers have had over the years, it's a weird issue thing to blame this on Hybrids. The fire recall the Hybrid does have is just due to the fact that the truck can be driven while the ICE isn't in use, exacerbating an issue a normal ICE vehicle would have already stopped for. Like it's literally caused by gas fumes igniting.

If this is a wide scale issue and not just something caused by a defect or damage to this specific truck, odds are it's on the ICE part of the truck.

Data from the National Transportation Safety Board, Bureau of Transportation Statistics and recalls.gov shows that overall, lumping EVs and hybrids together compared to ICE cars, more ICE cars caught fire than EVs; 0.3% for EVs and 1.05% for ICE cars.Jun 24, 2023

How may 1,000’s more ICE powered automobiles are on the road than BEV. Maybe this is why the disparity in fire incidents. 🧐

No, that is not how they did the surveys...Obviously, that would not make any sense at all. A majority of animosity toward electric vehicles, like many sad situations in this world, comes from a simple lack of understanding and knowledge on the subject. The gas to electric car ratios were the same. IN other words, they sampled 400k electric cars and 400K gas cars. Capisce?

BEV= battery powered only. Like Tesla, etc. HYbrids do catch on fire more often than ICE cars. There is the distinction.
Hybrids reflected the most at 3,475 fires per 100,000 vehicles. This is most likely because hybrids utilize two powertrains. ICE vehicles caught fire substantially less often, at 1,530 incidents per 100,000 vehicles. EV fires were significantly lower than the others, with 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles.Mar 22, 2023
Yes I have a Mav Hybrid, and Yes I have a Tesla.
