I agree, ranchero was a fairlane
Yes, but technically Fairlane, Falcon, Torino, or LTD II depending on the year. But all based off production cars.

Maverick only was based on the Focus/Escape chassis. Everything else on them is unique.

You should have stopped caring about the Mustang name well before that #operawindows

The car that saved the Mustang name! Even though we all hated them, they sold extremely well in 74-78.

It was almost as if Ford had a crystal ball forcast on the late 1973 Oil Embargo.

That made these litte Mustangs fly out of the showrooms!

They used to make a Mustang II. A Ranger II would have designated the vehicle as a truck, not relating it to a cheap car.

In today's world, these auto names are just pure marketing. As stated, likely chosen by a focus group made up of the intended/expected buyers.

"Would you be more or less likely to purchase a small light duty vehicle if it were named, 'Maverick'?"

Since Ranger was being sold already, they didn't want a repeat of the old Bronco/Bronco II days.

Ranchero was a regular car front end, single row seat, with a Wagon rear end made into a pickup. Not the same thing at all.

A study group of mostly 20 something aged people were asked what name they liked, and they chose Maverick.

Ford didn't realize what age group would really buy this little truck. Most Maverick Buyers are old enough to remember the Maverick car.

Also the Maverick name was used on an offshore SUV and Truck around 1990. So it's still relevant.
Well Yeah...of course. "Ranchero" can't fly a jet into a canyon and take out enemy planes and big guns positioned on the mountain sides. Duh......🤣🤣🤣

I think Ranchero would be a fine name. Maverick works too, but back in the day, Maverick was a cute sedan. Ranchero was the car/truck mix.

This has been brought up before, but still, I think about it occasionally.

Of course, Ford made the model T and model A in both car and truck configurations. I still like thinking my Maverick could easily have been named a Ranchero.

As long as you are only thinking about it "occasionally", I think you will ok. If you start to dwell on it, you many need to go to psychiatrist or a good Ford mechanic......................... They could get into the "nuts and bolts" of your outsized concern for the name. Just call it what it is: A MAVERICK!!! Now don't worry, be happy...........

Are you sure about that?

I'm somehow reminded of a backwoods Batmobile...
Like a mix of vehicles on Batman and The Beverly Hillbillies...

Ford didn't realize what age group would really buy this little truck.
That doesn't match up with what Ford said during the launch. Pam Wylie, Vehicle Program Directory for the Maverick:

Ford targeted a younger buyer with the Maverick, calling the segment the "new adventurer, young, curious and authentic." Describing them as " interested in efficiency and value to go along with capability" and "younger more diverse and more connected than any other truck buyer we had spoken to before."

From the presentation to the SAE conference

My point exactly.

Ford thought their buyers for this truck were 20 something old, instead of 45 and older.
