The other day driving about 25-30 I reached down to get a piece of gum without looking, my hand hit the dial and put the truck in reverse (or tried). Fortunately the computer sensed a FU, the R started blinking yellow, a warning noise came on but nothing bad happened and it allowed me to put it back in drive. Pretty good system built in.

did something similar awhile back, only I put it in neutral, took me a couple of seconds to figure out wth was going on, thought something was majorly wrong

I didn’t have my belt off, but i was reversing very slowly down the curved section of my driveway and wanted to make sure I wasn’t driving onto the lawn that had just been hydro-seeded, cracked the door open and got lurched into Park
Aaarrrggghhh matey ... truth is out ... truck was trying to save you from door knocking you down and running yourself over!

Over the years I have driven cars with all sorts of shifter set ups. Early 60's Chrysler's products with push buttons on the dash along with a dash mounted park lever were among the strangest I encountered.

Four speed manual column shifter on a 1962 Mercedes was a bit different. I bet a lot people would have a problem driving that today.

I learned to drive in a 79 Dodge van with a “3 on the tree”

First mistake - swing across the street in our little Cul-de-sac to back into my driveway, turn shifter two clicks - lurch forward nearly into my neighbor's yard.
Backing out of a parking space - still rolling slowly, switch to Drive, engaged Park with a jolt. Even at minimal speed stopping nearly 4000 lbs with a little pawl can't be good.
I expect that over minimal speed park is locked out, don't intend to try it though.
Ignore looking at the dial while turning it look at the dash indicator. It’s instant. Faster than shifter. Use all the indicators. Don’t hate new tech. Outhouses used to be for The rich….

I miss driving a manual. My last two cars both had manuals. However... I managed to mess up my left foot somehow and now it hurts like a mother when I flex it very much. I can live with the rotary dial, it isn't too bad once you get used to it. It won't ever replace the giddiness of downshifting as you come out of a tight curve as you go zipping through some hills. I can accept the dial in the Maverick... a 6 speed stick would be pretty awesome though.

I was so used to draping my right hand on the shifter lever, but I don't mind the rotary dial except why could they not put another mode "M" for manual shifting with paddle shifter on the steering wheel. It doesn't have to be a dual-clutch complexity but just let me decide when I want to go up and down. I must say the "sport" mode works well to mimic the spirit of how I drive most days but not THE way I want on rare days. And I want a manual parking brake for winter-time steering abilities. Santa is it too much to ask?

Yea they don't even have it on the 2.0 Escape ST-Elites. My old RAM from 2012 had it (very basic and not paddles, but the ability to select nonetheless).

After reading post after post about the nightmare rotary shifter while waiting on my Maverick to arrive....
I was quite pleasantly surprised that I like it! Much better than the electronic stem shifter in the wife's X-3 and much better than the tall shifter that was in the Jeep the Maverick replaced. Never in the way reaching for a coffee cup. Takes up no room and is easy to clean around.
I rarely look at it, I look at the dash gear selection readout.

Don't drink and drive?
That saying.." don't drink and drive" could and should be applied to FSD, which is Years from being perfected. ( FSD> full self driving, as in only Tesla cars, I think. I don't know anyone else that is attempting do design and mfg another system like that one.)Off topic? yeah....
