From the manual.

Though it doesn't really mean the Maverick will get it's specified mileage with 87 - It does say Premium improves performance. Apparently 85 voids the warranty. Good to know (Not that any gas station I go to has 85).

Maybe one of the people who's talked to the guys driving the hybrid around and getting 40+ mpg asked about it.
The problem with that owner's manual is that its a combination 2.0T and 2.5H owner's manual, and I believe the 91+ octane recommendation is in reference to the 2.0T engine, not the 2.5H.

Anywhere that the 2.5H is specifically mentioned by Ford, it does not have the 91+ octane recommendation that the 2.0T does. For example from their technical specifications:

Likewise on the Ford Maverick marketing material for horsepower, the footnote regarding the number relating only to operation on 93 octane was for the Ecoboost, and was not present on the hybrid.

I seen in the 2.5 hybrid engine specs that it has 13.5 to 1 compression will it require premium to run correctly
The Atkinson engine compression ratio is calculated differently because the intake valves remain open for part of the compression stroke. Everything I've seen says 87 will be fine.

I would not be running low octane fuel if towing.

The Ford owners manual says that 87 is the minimum recommended BUT for better performance and efficiency to use premium especially if pulling a trailer. It also goes on to say that you may hear pinging if you use 87 Octane.

The full size Bronco will run on 87 octane, but it says right in the manual that if you want the rated horsepower from the engine, you need to run it on premium. Comes down to what you can do and what you should do. I run mine on plus fuel and every fourth fill-up is premium.

What’s the benefit of the fourth fuel up being premium?

I believe that for the turbo. I do not believe that for the 2.5 hybrid Atkinson/electric engine.

Ugg, give it a year and this forum’s threads will be full of “I only use premium fuel despite what the manual says” crowd just like the Honda Fit forum.

But yeah, from what I am seeing, hybrid is 87; Ecoboost is 91 recommended (if you want the full 250hp), 87 minimum.

The hybrid isn’t a turbo direct injection engine attempting to squeeze out every ounce of power from a smaller engine like the 2.0.
The hybrid is 2.5 multiport injection natural aspirated atkinson cycle engine. Think of it like the prius. It is designed to run on regular and won’t see the HP gains from premium like you would in the Ecoboost.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m more curious about the Fuel Funnel located behind the rear seat in the owners manual 🤷🏼‍♂️

Maybe the technical specifications I got for the Maverick are out of date, but they seem to apply the "horsepower" footnote to both hybrid and EcoBoost.

It's more to clean out the insides of the engine and to be able to run it at its peak capacity. Been doing that on my 2016 Escape with 187,000 miles with no issues and will keep doing it with my Bronco and soon with my Maverick. It also has to do with the price of a gallon of gasoline these days. I would run it on premium all the time if it wasn't so expensive to do so. And while vehicle manufacturers say you can run an engine on a particular grade of gas, doesn't mean that it's best for the engine. right in the Ford owners manuals for ALL of their engines, it states it will run on 87 octane - "BUT" ! It's just like the type of oil you put in the car. You "can" use a synthetic blend "BUT" a full synthetic will last longer. It really comes down to the owner and if you are willing to pay the premium for the added performance/life. Also just my personal opinion on what's best for me and MY vehicles.

Doesn’t the manual explain it?

No it's not present specifically, but what is present is the "minimum". If Ford didn't think that it would also run better on a better grade of fuel, they would have left that out (IMPO).
