Hello all, new member here. Thanks for the add.

Question - I know pretty much no one knows if the 2024 Hybrid will have an AWD option. But, if it does, do we think it will have up to a 4000lb tow capacity like the Ecoboost?

Asking because I really would like the hybrid version but I do have a 3,500lb camper. I have my trusty 17 year old Toyota Tundra with 218k miles on it but man that thing is a beast to drive around the city sometimes.

Ford rates Escape Hybrid and PHEV Escape at 1,500 lbs. Were Ford to offer AWD Hybrid Maverick I'd expect tow rating no higher than 2,000 lbs and possibly 1,500.

Ford had 2X demand vs. capacity to build Maverick Hybrid so I see no reason for Ford to offer AWD Hybrid Maverick and stoke more demand.

Buy an Ecoboost, it's the right powertrain for your use, you will be happy with it.

One thing about the Tundra. You get to stop often while pulling a camper trailer - many trips to gas pumps.

Never hurts to dream but cannot see a Mav hybrid with FX4 and 4K towing.

This is a good take. I'd like a hybrid AWD model myself, but realistically given the Hybrid demand there just isn't a reason for Ford to make a big move at this point. I don't even see it for 2025 at this point. Maybe by 2026 they'll ditch the ecoboost engine and offer hybrid/phev only with increased specs for towing. Whatever change will happen at some point, it'll likely be a bigger move than simply adding AWD to the hybrid drivetrain as-is.

Yeah, all great points, unfortunately 😂 Thanks for the input.

Well the 2024 Tacoma will have a hybrid option, and tow quite a lot- but it's designed to be a heavier duty truck and the hybrid still uses the stock engine/ transmission. The Sienna is AWD/hybrid, they put the electric to the rear and ICE in front, I believe. So they have some experience in doing it.

The Maverick was designed from the start to be "lighter duty". Love our hybrid although I wish it could tow more, or have AWD, even better, both!

I work for a Ford dealer. Years ago Ford attempted the hybrid Fusion with AWD. It did not go well. From what my tech told me the AWD reduced the fuel economy too much. They may try to revisit the idea of an AWD Hybrid because of the advancements since then, but does not seem likely. More likely to see an all electric AWD rather than an AWD hybrid.

2020+ Escape Hybrid AWD EPA ratings reflect a 0-1 mpg city and combined hit, 0 mpg highway, vs. Hybrid FWD. That’s nothing.

Same generation EcoBoost Escape (1.5L or 2.0L) AWD takes a 3 mpg city/highway/combined hit.

Hybrid officially takes a negligible efficiency hit whereas it’s noticeable on EcoBoost. If this is incorrect, then I’d be blown away to see what my Escape could do if it were a FWD Hybrid.

Increasing towing capacity on the hybrid would probably require more significant design changes than what Ford would be willing to invest right now. When Ford adapted some of the parts used on the Escape hybrid platform, one of their challenges was towing capacity as this article on sae.org indicates:

The Maverick hybrid’s 2,000-lb (907-kg) trailer-tow capability put transmission thermal management into focus. Initially this presented a challenge, the engineers recalled, because taking an all-new electric machine with its own heat-rejection signature and cooling it in the carryover HF45 [from the Escape] “was not a straight plug-and-play,” Barbarena noted. Clever internal “tuning” and attention to lubricant flow ensured the hybrid pickup withstands SAE J2807 tow testing and has helped the powertrain team close the tow-capacity gap with Maverick turbo gas-engine models, which is 4,000 lb. (1814 kg).

Since the Escape already comes in a hybrid AWD configuration, that would probably serve as the appropriate starting point for a similar offering on the Maverick - after all, this is a key strategy that saved significant development costs on the Maverick to begin with. It seems doubtful that Ford engineers would be able to push the limits of these hybrid components even further than they already have without significant efforts and possibly even a complete redesign of key powertrain components.

TBH - I'd even be surprised if an AWD hybrid is part of the 2024 lineup. If it is though, I'd be very surprised if it meets your towing needs.

The Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring is a plug in hybrid AWD with a rear electric motor. So Ford does have such a system in use already. But the Corsair Grand Touring is very expensive - starting at over $50k. Not sure Ford could make that hybrid system make sense in the Maverick.

Thinking about this a little more... just how "trusty" is that Toyota?

Depending on how often you tow your camper and what kind of daily driving you expect to do in a Maverick, you might consider keeping the Tundra around just for towing if you can afford it and getting the hybrid Maverick anyway. Run the numbers for your own scenario but I imagine if you plan on putting a lot of city miles on the Maverick, the annual fuel savings would be a couple hundred. Tell your insurance that you'll keep the Tundra parked except to tow on weekends, and they should drop the rate a bit. It might be a stretch, or just completely impractical if your situation is different but it's something to think about.

It is likely your going to see a all wheeler Hybrid next year BUT its not going to tow 4k. My 2.0 FX4 with 4k tow package gets 23/24 mpg local, yesterday did 100 miles on highway over 30mpg at 70mph most of the way, I have gotten as much as 38mpg highway with cruse set at 69mph at about 2k rpm, you don't need a Hybrid.

Yeah I am kicking around the idea of keeping the Tundra around also. It would drop the insurance by about 1/2 if I did just use it for towing. Thanks for input.

Adding AWD and a bigger battery will add weight, which may lower the payload and towing capacity.

But yes, I want to see the AWD hybrid too!!
