So I was working on my truck and I needed a mythical 10mm socket to loosen a nut. To my surprise, when I checked my toolbox, I was instantly able to find it.

Feeling really good about my life at this point, I was going to share a joke about it being my lucky day or needing to buy a lottery ticket.

That is when karma struck. I dropped the socket deep into the recesses of my engine bay, where no one since my truck was built has laid their eyes or hands and where no one will likely ever do so again.

After 30 minutes of scrounging around my toolbox and house for implements that might be useful in the retrieval of my precious 10mm socket, I finally decided to hop in my truck and gun it, hoping the socket would fall out the bottom of my engine bay.

That it did. I came to a screeching halt and carefully searched the path from whence I came... There was no sign of that most coveted tool.

Defeated and my lesson learned, I decided I would never again tempt fate again and even think about celebrating the quick retrieval of a 10mm socket.

You win again 10mm socket!

I have a good feeling you’ll find it tomorrow.

One of the worst sounds on the planet: the sound of a tool clinking and clanking into the engine bay, but NOT hitting the ground. More than half a century ago (yikes), I lost a 9/16" Craftsman combination wrench under the hood of a '59 Chevy wagon. It turned up over six months later running at speed over a somewhat elevated RR track, a favorite activity of my associates. Made a hell of a noise banging away between the road and the bottom of the car.;)

Do you have any 25 mph speed bumps nearby?? You may hit one or two at higher speed. If you get caught exceeding the speed limit, tell the man I told you it was OK! :D

Stop by O'Reilly's and buy a couple of these, then call it a day.

or just grab a 3/8" and give it a try, it's only 0.018701 inch smaller

Not a 10mm, but I had a dumba&& move many years back on a Suburban. Was working on the top of the engine and had the distributor pulled. Thought it would be really bad if I dropped the bolt holding it in place down the hole - then promptly fumbled it and guess where it went. Ended up taking the engine apart to find it, but I did find it. Learned a lot about engines that day.

It may be laying on that crazy shield thing covering the bottom of the engine. Yes the one they had dealers cuts holes in to lessen vapors that could cause a fire - HA. Go around some curves and it will probably roll out on the road thru one of the holes.

Not a socket, but my wife dropped one of her rings at the back of her blazer and I looked high and low for it and couldn't find it. Thought it got caught on the back side of the bumper but it wasn't there. A few years later I had to drop the fuel tank and there it was laying on the top of it. Couldn't believe it stayed there all that time.

You're working on stuff buying from some pretty cheap suppliers if 0.5mm under spec is nominal. 3/8" is almost always too small for 10mm.

I'm thinking of starting a business that sells only 10mm sockets in bulk.

My grandmother lost the diamond from her wedding / engagement ring. She noticed it when she was coming out of a corn crib... She searched for it for hours, with no luck.

When my grandfather got home and she told him about it, he said "Let's check the corn crib." When he opened the door, there was a ray of sunlight coming through a knothole in the side wall. It made a 2" circle on the floor of the crib, which was (of course) covered in corn. Sitting right in the middle of the circle of light was my grandmother's diamond ring, with rainbows of light sparkling in every direction. Astronomical odds against opening the door at the exact time when the sun hit that spot...

That's a sign she was supposed to get it back!
