Sorry, I'm just now reading these threads and I don't understand. I have a 1st Edition with a trailer hitch and it came with a "Full Size Spare". Now, I admit I only lowered the tire to the ground (get familiar with doing it) so I didn't measure it, but my understanding is that it is a "Real Useable Full Size Tire" are you saying that it isn't?
It's not. It's an "almost" full size spare, but not a little donut.

In all honesty how often do you use your spare tire? I'm 53 and have been drying since 15, in all that time I think I have used my spare maybe 4 times.
I get where you are coming from, but some people have luck like mine. I got a screw in my tire with less than 50 miles on them.

I had 2 blown out the last 2 years while driving cross country. In my case, I definitely need it. This thread is for those like myself. If it doesn’t apply to your lifestyle then you may move on. Thanks for stopping by.
What does having 2 blow outs in a year have to do with this? The spare tire is there to get you to a service center where a new full sized replacement tire can be installed. The slightly smaller spare can and will do this job with ease. Cramming a full size tire under there won't change anything.

The spare on a Maverick is just slightly smaller than the full size tire, and will perform pretty much the same. Now if it was equipped with a donut I could see the point.

Personally if I was going somewhere remote off road, I would bring a full size tire/rim in the bed along with the original spare under the bed.

If your changing tire size, and money is not an issue, then ya you might as well go for the full size spare.
But your still gonna have an issue of fitting it under the bed without some modifications.
I personally would just cut back on the saw tooth thing.*

(* cue the safety nazi's loosing there shit in 3...2...1....)

You can only drive 50 miles on a donut. It can't get you through a 900 mile road trip plus stopping to get a blown tire fixed in a middle of nowhere isn't an option either. I want an option to put on a full size when it happens and get it fixed later in my own time. Having a full size spare saves me time and $$. Not saying that this is for everyone since not a whole lot of people travel or do road trips like I do.

Can't safety margins still be maintained while fitting an oversized tire in the space by deflating it some? Most everyone carries an emergency tire inflator.

I'm starting to think this might be the best compromise. In the time it takes to jack the truck up and remove the flat, the spare could be fully inflated. Unless your side-gig is on a NASCAR pit crew,,,,,

But The Maverick doesn't have a donut, The spare is only and inch smaller in diameter than the regular tires.
By all means put a full size tire under there if it makes you happy, it's your money.
