I drove past the local Ford dealer and saw they had a 22 Maverick on the lot. The color was Hot Pepper Red like I want but I was unsure of the rest of the package. So I swung around the block and came back for a longer look. Longer as in stopped at the curb instead of at 25 MPH.

Turned out to be an XLT, hmm, time to go hit the computer at home I thought.
It is up for sale for roughly 31K and is an EcoBoost engine. Not what I want at all but???

I am torn between buying it so I have a Maverick and can wait for the 23 order that I had in for the real McCoy. One part of me says heck yeah, that will surely get that email from Ford saying your order is being built. The other part is saying, don't get in a hurry what you really want, what you will pour more dollars into for modifications is just around the corner.

So I am not sure what I am going to do. Spending 31 now and another 33 later just seems foolish. But this a Maverick we are talking about! Is there anything foolish about that?

So I expect that half of you will say buy it and enjoy it and if you don't get the 23 at least you have one.
25% will say wait for it. The other 25% will complain that they can't find one to buy, have been waiting forever and are getting really pissed off at Ford.

Wait, that might be the 50% group.

Not sure what I will do. I might ask my kids as they are coming in for Christmas late this year and one of them has two Hybrids on order.

Later.

Try talking him down. If you maaaaybe get 1 or 2 k off that would eliminate the angst with the decision. Can't hurt to lowball.

True there, but first I need to have the mindset that I WANT THIS TRUCK! and I am really not there just yet. Once I get there, IF I get there I will be doing the lowball thing as it has unlisted number of miles on it. It's a USED truck for crying out loud. Same rules apply in my mind about buying used.

Sure it is a novel truck and should command a higher resale value but that doesn't mean I have to pay it. I will watch and see if it disappears before the new year or sits there gathering moss.

I hear you if I could get one now for MSRP an AWD might tempt me too far. I want hybrid but the high chance of not getting it sucks. I also not sure if EB Mavericks will hold their value or appeal when the new ranger comes go which is basically a beefier Maverick on a frame.

Sort of a tough question and situation. So where you a MY22 order rolled over to MY23 or a brand new MY23 order? Your dealer allocations might play a part and your ordered configuration could play a part. I think for me if I was in that situation, I would probably buy and enjoy it. You could always sell it yourself or trade it in if and when your order arrives. Go with your gut feeling.

My order for a 2022 Maverick XLT got screwed up by the sales manager and never actually got officially ordered. So I got a call about 4 months later after given him a good chewing out the screw up, saying they had one and to come in. I even told them MSRP or not interested.. come on in and we can discuss it… we’ll, after wasting 2 hrs of my time, I told him to stuff it and I was not paying $7K over msrp… yeah, I know someone else would, but I wasted their time, and the other 2 customers that came in to look at it walked away when they were told it was being sold….

wait and order one the way you want it and save that $$$$ to do what you want to it.

I very highly doubt it will sit there long. Most Mavericks don't. I bought a '22 that I didn't order and it didn't have one pkg on it I would have ordered. It is even HPR and I don't want that color at all. But, I needed something else to drive so I didn't put a ton of miles on my new Mustang. So I bought it. It was $50 cheaper MSRP wise than the '23 I ordered with less stuff, but, I still want my '23. I plan to trade this one the second my '23 comes in. If it's sometime next year, great. If it's early 2024, great. I am no longer in need of another vehicle to drive, so this one will do until what I ordered gets here.

Here’s something to consider. Due to significant drop off in MPG on the hybrid during cold weather and you are in Oregon, the Ecoboost is going to be very very close in overall MPG.

Just saying.

Sure. Hope you get the last laugh. And the Maverick!

The first thing to do would be to talk to the dealer and figure out what the out the door price is. The price on the internet could be before they add more junk fees along with the normal tax and registration.

You also need to take into account how many miles it has. If it has 12k miles then a third of the full warranty has been used up and a good chunk of the powertrain warranty.

There is also a non-zero chance that it has been in an accident or some other problem if it has a non-trivial number of miles on it.

Well, you should make the decision now. After the New Year you will probably be kicking yourself either way. If you spring for it now you'll just be happy with low chance of regret.

In Missouri you would want to wait and purchase it after the 1st to avoid property taxes next year.

My worst mpg with my hybrid so far is 28 mpg, and that was driving in 8-11º weather, into a 20 mph headwind, driving 75+ mph speed limit on the highway. Then three days later, my average for the complete tank is now up to around 36 mpg, with my latest "trip" (only 11 miles) showing 50.4 mpg.

So exactly how will the Ecoboost match the hybrid's economy? I don't believe that's accurate in ANY real world situation.
