When my phone is connected via Bluetooth and I press the voice button on the steering wheel, I get the message shown below. Where do you actually enable phone voice assistant?

What kind of phone? I don't recall ever seeing that prompt. You might want to unpair the phone , then pair again, paying attention to any prompts you get on the phone.

It's a Samsung Galxy S10e. I've already unpaired it once and still get the message.

Yeah, that's what I had to do. Not what I wanted to do. I don't want Google listening to my every word! But that's the only way it works.

Wow. First thing I do when I get a new phone is turn that stupid thing off. Guess that will be an unused button on my steering wheel.

Don't know if it would still do it while connected to a phone but on a Lariat w/ Luxury it should trigger Sync's own voice recognition. Although that's its own flavor of mildly useless.

You two have Sync 3 via the Lariat Luxury Package, which has built-in voice commands, which are used by default so long as you don't have Android Auto or CarPlay active.

The standard infotainment system (like in OP's XLT) does not have native voice commands. It does not have/is not Sync, even though they copied the Sync 3 interface. It does have the ability to pass through voice commands to your connected smartphone, to use Google Assistant, Siri, Bixby, etc.

The Escape has it. Don't use it. They don't program it for the American Southern accent.

If it uses Google assistant it should be half decent. I'd rather that than a Ford voice system. Google does voice recognition is orders of magnitude better than Ford. I get it can control climate through Ford, but no one does that.

Hope there's a setting to make Google default over Ford.

There's an adage in the technology field whenever things go wrong: 90% of problems are related to cabling.

What about restarting it? Thought that was number 1
