I've got a shiny-new set of McGard #64073's in front of me, the diameter at the small end of the taper is 17.7mm

I'd still like someone with OEM steelies to measure the hole diameter, and verify the existence of the 60-degree taper.

Wrote an entire long detailed post with photos and then hit "back" on my phone...lost it all. Adding the photos here and will go back and write the story on my laptop......

And here I am on the laptop. Ok. So I said "F-it" and ordered some lug nuts on Amazon. Just some no-name brand. Just to see what would happen. Guess what? They fit. Opening on them at the narrowest of the taper/at the tip of the lugnut is about 15.5mm. Gorilla ones are 16.5mm at the best. Shiny metal you see inside the Gorilla in the photos below is probably close to what I needed, but they seem to have added an extra layer of metal that widens the diameter larger than it needs to be. So now I get to contact Gorilla to be like......do you sell something I can use that will actually fit? Or am I stuck with no-name brand lugnuts. My original writeup was better. Ohh well. I am salty that I lost it. Haha. Second draft is never as good as the first.

I think you might be right. I emailed Gorilla last night to see if they had any thoughts. I'll post here if they get back to me.

So.....Gorilla emailed me back. Since they don't retail their own products directly (you have to buy thru a third party), I appreciate that they do still answer random people's emails quickly. In this case overnight/within about 12 hours.

I think they latched onto the term "aftermarket" when I mentioned the rims I was working with. They told me I need narrow/small body spline type nuts. I assume they said this since they think I have narrow recessed passageways in my rims before we even get to the face of the rim where the nut seats, and that my problem is the acorn cant even get close to the face of the rim due to being wide......which is not the case. I can clink the nuts right on the face of the hole, but they dont recess at all into the 60 degree seat. Which is what was frustrating me when I was trying to troubleshoot. All the Google results were about nuts not being able to even enter the recessed channel to get anywhere close to the face of the rim. Benefit of cheap steel rims is that the nut interface surface is totally accessible and not recessed at all, so that was not my issue.

They said I need K5TS-14150BGR specifically. I looked at them online and they look just like the 91148's, other than the style of socket you need to use. And the width of the largest part of the nut of course, to accommodate fitting into a recessed nut hole as they designed them to do.

I think I am going to snag some 91148 and see what happens. If they work then I will return the no-name Amazon ones and then......sell the original set of Gorilla that I bought (61148). Since I got them from Ebay and don't want to deal with the hassle of trying to return a heavy box of metal to an Ebay seller. Anyone want to buy 20 of the 61148? Haha. I might list them in the for sale section of this forum.

Forgive my ignorance. Bought some rims for snow tires. Seemed to be pretty generic stock steel rims. Advertised as great for stock wheel replacement, etc..... Rims/wheels are labeled as lugcentric/ centered by the studs, not the center bore. "Black RTX Steel Rim. Diameter: 17in, width: 7in, bolt pattern: 5-108, center bore: 63.5, offset: +40 (positive offset)."

Bought some gorilla lug nuts in black to match the rims. "Factory Style Bulge Acorn Black Lug Nuts 14mm x 1.5 61148BCX."

Should I be concerned that the acorn taper of the gorilla nuts doesn't seem to go "into" the rim holes very much, if at all? The narrowest point of the lug nut seems to either match or be very similar to the diameter of the lug hole in the rims. I'm not seeing the point of the acorn taper? There is no "cup" for the lugs to rest in or anything like that. Did I buy the wrong nuts for these rims? Do I need non-tapered nuts? Photos for what I mean.

You're right can't get them to work on the back side of the rim😂 And people wonder why their wheels fall off

Will that design of the hole work? Also will it handle the 148 ft/lbs torque recommended? Probably will but could it distort enough to mate the rim into the threads?

Hopefully no issues. At the end of the day they are all just acorn/60 degree tapered nuts (except the original Gorilla that are oddly wide at the narrowest taper....). All the other variations are just the total depth of the internal threads, style of head, and shape of the socket you need to use. At least that is what I am taking away from this.

Did you ever get and measure the Gorilla # 91148's?

HRG
I did. They (the 91148) were about the same diameter at the opening as the other "factory bulge" Gorilla nuts were (model 61148). They just don't flare out quite as wide at the widest part of the "acorn". That seems to be the only difference between the factory bulge 61148 and the 91148.

Costly testing since I got both sets of Gorilla from Ebay and I really dont feel like dealing with return shipping them. I did return the one set of Amazon nuts (the ones that were a flat washer style when I was just grasping at straws for anything that might work), but kept the other Amazon "no name brand" ones, since those seem to be the only so far that fit into the 60 degree taper/seat enough into the rims for my comfort level.

Still don't have a truck to test these on. Haha. In theory I go into production next week and might see my Maverick right before or after Christmas. Assuming I get the jack stands and nice floor jack I have on my Christmas list, I'll swap the stock wheels and tires for my Falken WILDPEAK A/T TRAIL on the cheap black steelies and see what happens.

Realized I never updated this with the latest.

I used the cheap Amazon ones for a while, but then did not like how long the lug nuts were. So I got another cheap set from Amazon that are "shorter".

Been running these for a few months. No problems. No loosening of nuts over time (I know since I switched out the wheels for summer and it took some effort with an impact wrench to get them to loosen.)

I was unaware this was a problem...

mainly because every tire tech uses an impact.

Hold that trigger long enough and it'll tighten properly eventually

I'm thinking I need flat washer type.... the lugs are gonna be 14mm. The holes in these rims are 14.8'ish. So there isn't going to be space for any type that have a shank that goes inside the rim like a mag seat style.

If it works for a super duty, gotta work for a Maverick.....right? Haha.

Were you able to resolve the lug nut issue?
