Kayak rack options

Anyone successfully install a simple and inexpensive kayak rack for the Mav? The shorty bed isn't ideal for a set of 10' kayaks, otherwise I guess I need a utility trailer. I'm just not feeling the value with a $1400 name rant set of aluminum tubes!

Look at bed racks on ebay. I bought one for $100. You don't need j-racks. Just strap the yak to the rack with a cam strap. Having the rear crossbar at the back makes it easy to load. It's written up somewhere on this site. Bow and Stern lines optional.

I use the harbor freight hitch extender for moving my 14' Sunfish sailboat and it works quite well. Would work fine too for kayaks but it sticks pretty far out.

Best solution - get elevate CS racks and add kayak loading rollers on the back rack. Just lift the front of the kayak into the roller and push it up onto the racks.

I know this is an old comment, but do you have any pics of your sunfish loaded up? I was looking at a 12' Barnett Butterfly and was wondering about hauling it with the bed extender.

I have the Elevate Rack and would love a third tie down spot for my 17' kayak. I wish they would make an cantilever extension for the Elevate Rack like Thule has ( https://www.thule.com/en-us/truck-r.../thule-tracrac-cantilever-extension-_-24001xt ).

If I had to do it again I would try to find rack that had the cantilever extension kit that would work with a hard cover roller up tonneau cover. If only Ford had factory roof racks for the Maverick it would have made my life that much more easier.

As for getting a hitch extender...not an option for me. I need the hitch for my bike rack.

I know this is an old comment, but do you have any pics of your sunfish loaded up? I was looking at a 12' Barnett Butterfly and was wondering about hauling it with the bed extender.

I don't I'm sorry but it worked just fine. I did however also run two motorcycle tie down straps to each end of the extender and up to the truck tie downs for extra support - to keep it from bouncing on the freeway. A 12' should be easier than the 14' sunfish

I'm not sure if I asked you this but how long is that kayak & how heavy is it? For the front tie down is the rope resting on the paint?

My kayak/microskiff is 23’. I can push it a little farther forward but it did fine for the 2000 mile round trip. Weighs 90 lbs. The straps on the hood are made to just fit inside and lock when you close the hood. They didn’t damage anything. They are straps about 1” wide.
