I have about 3,500 miles on my Maverick XL Hybrid and one issue that I have been monitoring is that the brake system seems to be intermittently grabby and abrupt at slow speeds of 0-3 mph.

This would be such as when rolling into a parking space or maneuvering a 3-point turn with light to medium pedal effort. Sometimes it also happens coming to a stop light or stop sign.

The electronic brake system snap engages creating the sensation of the brakes grabbing. It is not severe enough to lock the wheels, but creates a noticable jerk in your motion. You can feel it in the pedal and hear it at the firewall where the system's electronic brake motor is mounted (means it's not happening at the calipers and discs).

The issue is one that for me as one who test drives lots of different vehicles is on the feather edge of being a "characteristic of low grade refinement" in the system or "something I need to have my dealership inspect". It's annoying but not sure it rises to the level of "problem".

I recently however tested and 2022 Escape Hybrid and it did not exhibit this behavior which has me thinking that I may consider a dealership visit.

I'm keeping an eye on it and will be discussing it on an upcoming review update but I wanted to put this out there and poll the masses to see if anyone else with a hybrid is experiencing this.
Sometimes it grabs me so hard and that shit is violent like I think i am getting hit or something. Scares me every once and awhile in stop in go traffic. One of my very few complaints.

Good way to put it. Feels like you put the shifter in park at 5mph

I feel for you guys, i dont feel it like you do, i drive mostly in ECO mode and use 1 pedal operation. The only place i brake big time is rolling up to a light, cause i 1 pedal it by using the go pedal release as the vehicle brakes, then i slow to ~2mph and apply brake. Pretty much just use brake to hold Mav from going forward. The brake regen is my vehicle brake.

What i see is the brake hold release time/action, this is rough operation for me.

Both of these operations are not controlled by the brake pedal directly(and this false feeling maybe whats misleading people), the ECM is controlling several actions of braking including the transition from brake regen to friction braking and even the bias area in between.

I can see a problem with like you take your foot off accelerator, vehicle braking starts, but is not enough for operator, so operator steps on brake pedal, brake regen kicks in more, while operator overshoots brake pedal application. Both applications are quite applied and vehicle suddenly and somewhat violently comes to stop.

I have gotten pretty good with any brake pedal application(as it is dicey), its like you have to try and guess and adjust for the added regen braking in you vehicle braking procedure.

What makes it even more dicey, is that the braking regen is Not linear, it wants to apply more regen braking as the vehicle speed decreases?

Hope this explanation helps, this is what i think is occuring?

Thanks all for this thread. I’ve got this same brake issue. Will be taking it into the dealership tomorrow for the hood mod recall and have asked them to look at the brakes as well. Is there anything else, anything explicit that I should ask them to look at? The dealer didn’t seem to know anything about it when I explained what was happening.

Hello, Mike!
Send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your local Ford dealer.
I’d be happy to see what I can do to assist. Thanks!
Well with in excess of 17 thousand people chiming into this brake issue ( My Hybrid also)
We can only hope Ford will get to bottom of this brake problem Sooner rather than later!!!!!

The first time it happened for me the auto hold was indeed on...but the second time it was not. Considering how crazy smooth everything else about this powertrain is, the feeling was a bit startling and accompanied by a distinctive metallic "clank", so I doubt you would have overlooked it. If you don't experience it, perhaps that means it's something that's not inherent, and can be corrected.
Thank you I'm getting that same clank sounds like something breaks in the brakes, I'm less happy with this part of the brakes, than the one that when you push on the brakes you push pushing then the grab this bothers me less with this part of the brake problem. I sent my complaint to the HTSB hoping everyone will do the same and get this issue resolved

OP, any useful intelligence to pass on from FMC's private message thing a few months ago? Appreciate this post and your other reviews BTW.

For the record the FMC outreach and direction to a dealer didn’t do squat for me, dealer had no idea wtf I was talking about.

sounds about right, been kind of waiting for ford to actually find the fix so I don’t waste 2 hrs driving, but I guess that’s not happening.

They have their hands so full of recalls (emustang battery fires) etc, I read a number 900,000 recalls, and now a class action suit because they knowingly sent out weak roof pillars that collapse when rolled over, they are a deeply troubled company mired in their own overreach to become the e vehicle of the future. My own braking issue has either subsided or I’ve become so used to it I anticipate it unconsciously or both but their situation makes me wish there was a Honda or Toyota small hybrid truck instead…
But it’s running great so why worry, I like it a lot, but I’m shy of loving it.

It’s not just Ford. Almost every company since 2020 has had major issues.. Unfortunately it’s the times we live in…. If you want quality you will have much better luck buying something from 2019 or earlier.

I have the same problem. No doubt someone will have a fender bender. I’m am super cautious and baby it into parking spots. Talked to the dealer and they have not heard of a problem. Ford needs to address this issue or at least read all of these post. It’s definitely a problem. Owned 2 c-max hybrids and drive fusions, escape hybrids as well. Never had an issue like this.
