All depends on how much you actually need a truck. There simply is not a comparable alternative <$40k (outside the Santa Cruz), but that's irrelevant for me because we didn't need a truck. Based upon Ford's marketing and my time spend on this board, I think a lot of buyers are in the same category as I am.

We absolutely love the Maverick, but even 3+ months into ownership and with no complaints; in hindsight, we still likely are looking elsewhere at the $30k pricepoint (because a sedan meets our needs fine). YMMV.
Yeah exactly and well-put. That's just it ... I really want a truck bed with all wheel drive and modest off-road ability to get me to hiking, backpacking, and skiing areas while still giving a good vehicle for long cross country drives and good mpg ... oh yeah and I like all my tech toys. There's really no other option ... for me :)

Beautiful!!! My buddy has a green RTL. Paid $15,000 more than I did for the Maverick Hybrid Area 51. Loves it. Me too! The Maverick is working fine for me. I put a little gas in it when I fill up a can for the boat. Love that part for sure.
Yeah I definitely spent more and would have loved to get my maverick but oh well

Coming from a new Carbonized Gray XL Maverick owner GOD forgive me for my Covetness! The paint kinda looks like FMC's Area 51 only nicer. However, you prolly paid 2X I did for mine. I hate you. Don't EVER park next to my new Maverick. My truck would turn Chili Pepper Red!
Lol yeah it’s called sonic grey pearl and in person it’s awesome yeah out the door was 43k but it existed unlike my 22mav order lol

Honestly what sold me on the Maverick was price and hybrid. My other vehicle is a Bronco, love it but the Maverick literally gets double the MPG. The Maverick is my around town vehicle, as the British would say it's cheap and cheerful. I have a FE hybrid and with Chapman Ford pricing I paid a little over $31k OTD.

People compare the Maverick to many different types of vehicles but you can't lose site this car was built to a price point and for what it is it's pretty darn nice.
Funny, my 2014 C-Max doubles my wives 2019 2.0 Escape 😉

They have to have the best warranty so you would be tempted to buy one. Just Google Hyundai fires.
I did........WOW and the KIA's. When I look at Craig's List for Kia's and Hyundai's with over 125K miles there are basically none. Many with "new engine"

Hyundai is known for fighting warranty claims as well. I don't have a problem with the brand but myself, I just think the SC is about the ugliest thing on the road and would never own one. If I had to buy something else off the lot I would consider many other options first.

Bed is 6" shorter, and it shows when you look at it. Not sure if that translates into the bad but it is a negative against the SC. But the trunk under bed and integrated tonneau cover were big positives of SC.
You suck at math. Maverick bed is 54.4" and Santa Cruz is 51", which 3.4".

That said, I also don't understand someone saying the SC rear is more comfy than the Mav. I sat in both extensively at the auto-show when they were side-by-side and the Mav has less sill stepover length, wider opening more square doors, and better visibility for rear passenger.

Mav vs SC
Front Head Room (inches)
40.3 vs 40.7
Front Leg Room (inches)
42.8 vs 41.4
Front Shoulder Room (inches)
57.3 vs 57.6
Front Hip Room (inches)
55.4 vs 54.5
Second Row Head Room (inches)
39.6 vs 40.1
Second Row Leg Room (inches)
36.9 vs 36.5
Second Row Shoulder Room (inches)
55.6 vs 56.1
Second Row Hip Room (inches)
54.1 vs 53.5

So overall, they are basically the same size, but that said in the stowed position the Santa Cruz was WAY better than the Maverick, especially since the tray was easily removable. The seats store much more vertical and you can also 60/40 split which the Mav doesn't.

For people in the back, I think the Mav is better, for stuff in the back cab, the Santa Cruz is better.

The maverick had 27k miles on it already? Wow the difference of the cruz and maverick is about 3k based off your listed msrp of 40k for the maverick. The maverick holds more value hence the adjusted price. If value isnt a big thing it would get the cruz or look at Tucson or ranger. Your son would like 4x4 ranger maybe? You can get one for 41kish.. The tucson a tucson hybrid starts at 29k to 35k for the plug in. Personally i would look at tucson before buying a cruz
Let me clarify, the MSRP new would have been 27k. The truck had 116 miles after the test drive but was used.
So what was the price on the SC? I really like them but the lack of a turbo option on the lesser priced models ran me off.
Msrp is $37,920. They said they are doing ADM of "8%-12%" but we didn't get into the weeds as I was not buying that day.

The word "reliability" is what you used.... Honda Ridgeline is the choice if that is all you're considering. If Size, Cost, MPG's are a factor its the Maverick. If you're thinking easy comfort then chose the Mazda... If your going for ass ugly by all means you want the Santa Cruz.
This made me chuckle. You are right on. Ridgeline is old faithful. Maverick is what I really want, loved the drive but want my family to be happy.

I have never liked the looks of the SC front, but from the insides looking out no issues. That is the vast majority of the view I will have... Never loved the front end of my Edge but it was the right vehicle at the time.

This is me, to the T. I don't need a bed, but want one. We have a sedan and crossover. I would like a bed to load the kayak, thrown wet fishing gear, hunting gear, etc. I want to be able to hit a ranch road or fire road confidently, but won't rock crawl. My next vehicle will be AWD/4wd, auto cruise control, and prefer a bed. And I want to be able to fit it in the garage next to the wife's car without crawling out a window. Maverick EB Lariat Lux FX4 fits that perfect. I think I am talking myself back into the Mav!

Quick Google I did said 54" vs 48"... Hence the 6". I've been trying to convince my wife that 3" is 6" for years, but this wasn't one of those cases. I can say looking the the bed the SC clearly looks smaller, but part of that could be the tonneau as well. Exact dimensions I did not take on either.

Same but different use cases for sure. Dude, there's no better option. Especially when it comes to looks. Features and functions I want, they're actually pretty quite close. I'll take mpg of the Mav EB over the SC power. But the real one for me is the truckishness of the Mav and the longer bed.

Its a lot less deep. The bed itself is higher off the ground than the Mav, and the walls shorter. If you get the integrated tonneau, then that eats up a lot of space because you lose about a foot of vertical height, but that's true if you get a same style tonneau for the Mav too. On the other hand the SC has the party trick of having a shallow waterproof storage area in the bed. I would prefer them to have ditched the spare tire for a can of fix-a-flat and made the in-bed storage deeper like the Honda, but then you'd also have to use a more expensive tailgate like the Honda too in order to be able to reach the bottom easily.

BTW, talk about weird cross shopping, but I'm thinking that if I can't get a Maverick in a reasonable time frame ordered, I might just spring for a refreshed Kia Soul. Everyone I know hates the boxy shape, but I would so get a stormtrooper license plate frame and bobble-head for the dash and represent the empire in one! :D

You both are kind of right. The Santa Cruz doesn't have a vertical wall towards the cab. It slopes into the bed at the top. The top of the bed to the tailgate is 48", the bottom of the bed to the tailgate is 51". This is without the tonneau cover.

EB/Lariat/Lux/FX4/4K - Got busy off road for the first time this weekend - Handles amazing in the dirt, tight cornering, got the wheels to slip once but re-engaged quicky, taught suspension, gobbled up bumps, didn't hit the skid plate kind of weekend but I'm sure that's coming - lol. Key Fob remote start is money. Was not going to deal with remote / apps anymore. It's nice if u need to start the rig for whatever reason such as to get the rear inverter going or to heat up the cab while camping on cold mornings from the tent.

The Mav could use some more clearence up front with all of that low hanging plastic - etc but for us the size of the maverick is perfect for our family of three and we have no wants for anything larger that requires bigger parking spaces, harder to get in and out of , worse mileage, less comfy backseat space and a higher price. Its not for everyone if u consistently are hitting rock ledge off road routes, need to tow more than 4k and don't want to have to defend a"truck" that comes with a 4 cylinder engine -)

I got tired of waiting for my mav order and bought a ridgeline. I’m so glad I did too, i love it and my wife does too. 23.4mpg so far (I drive mostly highway). I still love the maverick, it’s great for what it is, but I feel like I’ve ended up with something much nicer and more reliable even if I did have to pay more money for it.
