New Maverick Recall: 2.5 Hybrid Engine Fire Hazard [Updated w/ Safety Recall Notice to Dealers]

Oh goody, my Maverick is supposed to be delivered any day and I bet they won't complete the sale until the recall repair has been done. Now it will have to sit at the dealer until they get these parts in.

Edited to add - thank goodness, it looks like there's no parts to arrive, just some maintenance the dealer can do. Maybe I'll get my truck in July after all.

Yeah, should take less than 30 min. No big deal (thankfully)

Hybrid is still better. It is a non-GDI motor where the Ecoboost is. Have fun dealing with the Carbon issues that come with a GDI Turbo motor.

So what kind of mileage will EB owners see before they start dealing with carbon issues?

Picked up my brand new Maverick Wednesday, and I'm waiting in line to enter the service dept for this Engine Fire hazard recall. They wanted to turn me away for not having an appointment. Wife reminded me I'm within the lemon law return period.

Not that easy. Has to be in the shop for the same issue 3 times

I hadn't noticed that! I assume an error for 2022...unless there are a few pre-production Mavericks out there??

That class action does not include the latest version of the 2.0. Ford has made changes to address the coolant issue beginning in 2019/2020.

That link is only one example. 2020-2022 GDI engines haven't had enough rounds to get past the "oil consumption" phase before the engines ultimately fail. It doesn't matter if the coolant issue has been remedied on the newer engines, it just means it'll take a little longer for the rod bearings to fail.

You're calling for rod bearing failures on the EB engines? And what percentage of engines do you expect this to happen to?

I ask because Kia/Hyundai have recalled about 6 million vehicles for similar issues and the failure count was about 5,000.. so fractions of a percent.

Both EB and Hybrid engines should be fine.

I'll still take the hybrid. The instance of engine failure is very rare, and the instances of engine failure leading to engine fire- rarer still.

There really is no controversy here. All car companies have issues.

It all comes down to proper maintenance and fluids (and for the GDI engines, top-tier gas and regular intake cleaning intervals). If you really care about your vehicle, you will take proper care of your vehicle!

I don't like to push percentages. It all depends upon the percentage of owners who maintain their vehicle properly. We do about 5 ring jobs on these engines (I work for Volvo) a month, and they are usually done on poorly maintained engines. And just because the manufacturer suggests 10k miles between oil changes doesn't mean you should wait that long (or ignore checking oil levels between changes), or visit your local "value lube" shop to have it done. Don't go cheap, or it will cost you in the long run. A good intake cleaner (CRC intake cleaner is great) every other oil change makes a world of difference as well. There are plenty of youtube videos about how to care for these engines.
