For some reason I was under the impression the HVB started the ICE, not the 12V Lead Acid. Whatever the case, a discharged 12V battery has to affect the rest of the electrical system in an adverse way.
The 12 Volt battery is needed to power the computer(s) that tell the eCVT to power the Electric Motor to drive the Maverick down the road. If needed the Motor/Generator can start the ICE engine.

No 12 Volts results dead Maverick.

The 12v AGM (Lead Acid)/ 470 CCA Battery powers a relay that activates/ establishes a connection for the HVB (a.k.a. "traction battery") to power a traction motor which engages the eCVT to get the vehicle rolling under electric power and then switch the ICE on and off as needed.

At startup - If the 12v battery is dead or detected/ sensed as dead by the Electronic Control Module (ECM) - which monitors the Battery System Management (BSM) - then the ECM shuts down all systems. Vehicle defaults to "Park" and vehicle won't move until the 12v battery is energized (or bypassed) by using external means (such as a "jump pack") to provide enough juice to activate/ close the relay enabling power to flow from the HVB to the traction motor which gets the vehicle rolling under electric power and then switches to ICE as needed in response to driving dynamics.

For everything to work, the HVB has to be healthy and in a good state of charge. So far, there has been no reports of unhealthy HVBs or irregularities in the HBVs state of charge.

Faults seem to point to the electricity distribution cable and/or its connection points following along the path between the 12v battery, the contact relay, and the DC-to-DC regulator used to charge the 12v battery back up from the HVB.

Depending on where you look, the cable in question may be:

  • P/N: LX6Z10C679B (equivalent/ similar Escape Hybrid cable?) or
  • P/N: LX6Z14290PA (Maverick Hybrid specific cable?)
There are also reports of poor soldering joints on connectors on those points on the cable where it attaches (a.k.a. makes electrical contact) with different motor components needed to provide or maintain electrical continuity for reliable vehicle operation.

To be continued ...
Thank you for this post.

My Maverick XLT came in March. I do alot of long distance driving for work so i am currently up to 7200 miles. Just this afternoon I go and get ready for one of my service calls and my key will not open the truck. Manually open the driver side door, put my key in the ignition and..........the vehicle will not start. I call Ford Roadside and within 30mins I get the rep to jump my truck. Now, this stuff shouldn't be happening so soon. Just wondering has anyone had this or any type of issue w/ the truck not starting?
Yep, mine died Thursday at just over 4600 miles. Had been feeling lucky that I have not had problems yet. I drove it straight to the dealership after getting it started. Have yet to hear back on a fix.

So how long until Ford issues a recall? Hasn't this gone on long enough??
I saw a post on one of the Maverick Facebook groups that Ford doesn’t want to issue a recall yet because the part is backordered. Here’s the full post of his:

“Infamous dead battery helpful update-

I’ve been reading a lot about this issue and I’m planning a long road trip so I decided to go ahead and head to my local dealership and set up my first oil change and look into getting the harness changed before a breakdown. They were able to use my vin and look up whether or not my truck was In need of the change. Not only was it not but the service desk showed me that ford is working on a recall and know which vehicles need it. They showed me a vin of a vehicle scheduled for repair and the highlight of the recall. The recall is not official because the part is on back order and they don’t want an overload of fixes. I would suggest going to your local dealer and having them look up your truck. At least you might be able to catch it before it happens. Hope this helps!”

Having a hybrid Mav with 1,200 miles on it, I too am concerned about a possible breakdown. Taking the Mav on vacation tomorrow. As this is my first hybrid vehicle- for clarity purposes, if I do encounter a loss of power, do I jump the hybrid battery underneath the back seat?
Sorry for what might seem like a silly question.....

Thanks for sharing!

Has anybody seen a confirmation of the info that you can go to your dealer to see if you are included in the group that needs to be fixed ?

I try to be helpful, thanks for including me with the famous Tim!

I don't think that the part availability affects when a recall is issued.... It isn't uncommon for recalls to be announced long before parts are available. So that part isn't true.

My suspicion is that they are trying to determine the exact range of vehicles that should be included in any TSB for FSA (i.e. recall). When they do publish TSBs & FSAs to dealers, they are VIN specific. They only show up on VINs that are eligible (based on build date).

I checked on my own hybrid Maverick (April 2nd build date) and there are no related TSBs. Only 2 TSBs total, one for "seat pan looseness" and one for exterior doors. I also just checked all Maverick TSBs and there are none for this concern.

There is info on the Technical Assistance Center ("Tech Hotline") about the issue. So if you has a dealer who hasn't heard of the issue, or is just testing the battery, you can direct them to check that out. The Ford forum for technicians and warranty also has info on this issue.

There is no way that I know if to look up information on a yet-to-be-announced recall. That part of the FB post makes no sense to me.

I suspect that the poster has just mixed up the terminology. I think that the someone at the dealership probably showed them communication from the Tech Hotline. We can access transcripts of successful contacts from other dealerships, and see what the issue was, and what fixed it. This info can be looked up on any Maverick VIN, so that doesn't specify which vehicles are involved.

I do work with warranty claims. Right now, there is no way (that I can think of) where a service department could look up your VIN and see if you are likely to have trouble with this wire harness. I do think that there will be a TSB in the future that will address this, and then we will be able to look this up.

My own hybrid Maverick was built in early April. I am @ 1800 miles and no problems.

Hope this helps some. If I do see anything about this issue where there is a range of vehicles identified, I will post here to let everyone know!

There currently isn't a recall or a TSB on this issue. So unless they can get the vehicle to act up, they probably won't be able to fix.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! And thank you for being here to help us with answers that we can’t seem to get from our own dealerships. Much appreciated!
