For some reason I was under the impression the HVB started the ICE, not the 12V Lead Acid. Whatever the case, a discharged 12V battery has to affect the rest of the electrical system in an adverse way.

My XLT hybrid has been in the shop for 3wks tomorrow, waiting on electrical wiring harness,it runs from the 12v battery to the high voltage battery, its not letting the battery charge there for we end up with a dead battery,I also had the deep sleep message a couple of times on the ford app before this happened,do did some others on the forum.good luck to you make them fix it right, and definitely make sure they give you a loaner car or a rental, hopefully your not making payments on your truck.👍

Obviously this is a Ford issue that they need to fix in affected vehicles but Jump starters (power packs) are relative inexpensive. I carry one in both of my vehicles. Since the 12v battery only powers the electronics and doesn't actually start the vehicle, a small one should be sufficient.

The message: "The powertrain control module has detected the power relay de-energized earlier than expected." is in essence saying that the 12v battery level is too low (probably <3v) to maintain relay contact and/or activate the relay so that the HEV can power the traction of the vehicle at startup.

My Maverick XLT came in March. I do alot of long distance driving for work so i am currently up to 7200 miles. Just this afternoon I go and get ready for one of my service calls and my key will not open the truck. Manually open the driver side door, put my key in the ignition and..........the vehicle will not start. I call Ford Roadside and within 30mins I get the rep to jump my truck. Now, this stuff shouldn't be happening so soon. Just wondering has anyone had this or any type of issue w/ the truck not starting?
I had the same problem with mine back in March. Had to jump it every time I went to start it. Took it to Ford the ran a diagnostic and changed the battery and the cable from the HVB to the 12 volt voltage regulator. Cost me nothing as it is covered under warranty, No problems since my build date was Sept 21.

Update:
Left the truck to "Charge" for 35mins. Turned off the vehicle and............back to square one. Taking this back to the dealer tomorrow morning to see where this goes. So pissed off!
All you need to do is take your truck to ford and say that the system is not charging the 12 volt battery and they will check the relay that switches the HVB to charge the 12 volt. And if you want to have a backup plan for this problem buy a battery jump starter so you can energize the traction motor/HVB. This is the best solution in this case, just remember if you lock your keys in the car you are screwed as the locks and number pad does not work with out 12 volts.

And if you don't mind me asking, how long did it take for the repair?

About 3 hours. The mechanic would not stop trying to figure it out until he fixed it. Just lucked out that he was an oldtimer that did not give up because it was hard!! (Also I just did a round trip from Tampa to St. Louis with no problems and got 36 mpg doing 75 mph for most the trip. About 3300 miles.)

I had same problem. I took truck to my ford dealership and it took 4 days to find the issue and wait for the part to be delivered. It turned out to be the LVDS Cable. Low Voltage Differential Signaling system. So far no more issues but I have lost confidence in the truck since it happened.

For some reason I was under the impression the HVB started the ICE, not the 12V Lead Acid. Whatever the case, a discharged 12V battery has to affect the rest of the electrical system in an adverse way.
The 12v AGM (Lead Acid)/ 470 CCA Battery powers a relay that activates/ establishes a connection for the HVB (a.k.a. "traction battery") to power a traction motor which engages the eCVT to get the vehicle rolling under electric power and then switch the ICE on and off as needed.

At startup - If the 12v battery is dead or detected/ sensed as dead by the Electronic Control Module (ECM) - which monitors the Battery System Management (BSM) - then the ECM shuts down all systems. Vehicle defaults to "Park" and vehicle won't move until the 12v battery is energized (or bypassed) by using external means (such as a "jump pack") to provide enough juice to activate/ close the relay enabling power to flow from the HVB to the traction motor which gets the vehicle rolling under electric power and then switches to ICE as needed in response to driving dynamics.

For everything to work, the HVB has to be healthy and in a good state of charge. So far, there has been no reports of unhealthy HVBs or irregularities in the HBVs state of charge.

Faults seem to point to the electricity distribution cable and/or its connection points following along the path between the 12v battery, the contact relay, and the DC-to-DC regulator used to charge the 12v battery back up from the HVB.

Depending on where you look, the cable in question may be:

  • P/N: LX6Z10C679B (equivalent/ similar Escape Hybrid cable?) or
  • P/N: LX6Z14290PA (Maverick Hybrid specific cable?)
There are also reports of poor soldering joints on connectors on those points on the cable where it attaches (a.k.a. makes electrical contact) with different motor components needed to provide or maintain electrical continuity for reliable vehicle operation.

To be continued ...

I'll start by saying I know very little about the interworking of how cars work. Basic stuff, sure. But nothing like some of this forum. Is there anything preventative that owners can do about this dead battery issue? What would someone say to their mechanic to look for to see if they are at risk for this?
Just tell them you bought a Ford hybrid. If they’re a descent mechanic they’ll know you’re in trouble. 😇
