For a DIY there are a lot of products out there. You could use a wash and wax product that leaves protection behind when you wash, you could use a spray wax or spray sealant, or you could try an entry level coating. I’d say it depends on your skill level and your comfortability is.
Thanks for all the info ParagonDetail. Completely agree that many of us the $1,000-$1,200 is too much but well worth it for those that can afford it. DIY is a nice way of doing it. Are metallic paints a bit thicker as there is an upcharge and ordered Metallic Alto Blue. Was also looking at PPF and decide in late January to order a DYI ceramic coating from R1 coating. Two things that concerned me is one the product came frozen in February. Customer service said the product will be fine as the chemical composition did not change. When asked how long of a shelf life as do not expect delivery now till September or later with a later October order. They told me about 1 year, but shine a light into the open bottle to see if there are any crystal. If so don't use the product.

Question ParagonDetail, does the statements made by customer service sound true to you?

System X makes, matter of fact, they pioneered some of the best coatings in the industry and they're starting to get really big. Been a certified installer for a few years now.

My private label spray coating, ULTRA is a unique formulation that is very similar to products like Cure, Reload, and other like SiO2-based sprays. The difference in why I chose to come out with my own is the user experience. Ultra is a wipe on wipe off, super slick product that is very very easy to use and has incredible gloss. PM me and I'll send you a bottle to try out! I use it after every coating installation to help the base coating cure faster and protect it while it's in its curing phase. After that I use it as a maintenance detailer. Standalone it has 9+ durability and can be used on any surface of the vehicle.

And yes, the new Gyeon EVO line is now a single layer application with much improved durability. I was extremely impressed with Mohs and Can Coat EVO.
Yeah I think that’s huge that they were able to do that. One reason I’ve kind of stayed away from a lot of their coatings is because who likes to do two coats of everything lol. Okay wow that sounds really interesting actually. I do love me some Reload and how it almost goes on like a coating. Especially something that can be used as a topper or insurance layer for freshly coated vehicles. I’ll definitely PM you.

Looks amazing. I have a place here in Huntington Beach that I plan on taking my truck to after I get it for a ceramic coat. It's not going to be cheap, but I want it done properly.

Thanks for sharing.

Nothing like professionally done paint - Old school paint buddy has been doing full off paint restorations on everything from E/types/928's,Shelby's, etc since the 80s. My favorite though is his still in possession 1970 Ford 500XL convertible pimp mobile. White top/interior with a deep burgundy red glazed exterior. I mean it's such a rich/deep tone buffed to perfection that I somehow was staring into it , for some reason I opened my mouth and could see how many fillings I have had done over the years -)

I do know I worry about the soft eco paint Ford is using on these Mavericks, not sure how to prepare myself for rock chips that for sure will happen pretty quickly it seems. 2004 Honda element with 225k looks new after wash/wax for instance.

Are those 245/65 with the Bronco sport wheels ? Looks legit-

Hahahah love to hear it. Older cars that actually have paint on them are the best. When you get a good paint code and get to polishing there’s not much more rewarding then seeing your reflection when you’re finished. I recently did a few Ford GT40s and the paint on those once you got the polisher to them was so rich and Insane it makes you wonder what they’re painting these cheaper Ford cars with these days.

Beautiful. This is what a new vehicle should look like when you receive it.
Note to Ford: I hope someone from Ford reads this; We all know that this is an inexpensive Vehicle but can you please apply a little more Clearcoat and paint to the Maverick? There has already been many Complaints of thin paint. I would hate to be one of the Customers who pay extra for one of the extra cost finishes like Cyber Orange and get thin paint.
Agreed. Last thing you should worry about when buying a vehicle is how thin or thick my paint is but it’s 2022 and you can never say never.

So your paint thickness measurements went from 2.28 to 4.24 mils. What part of the truck was lowest and what was highest? Or were these all done on one section like the hood? Thanks!
No they’re all done in a specific pattern. We take multiple readings of each panel to get accurate results. You can go from bottom of door to top of door and see a 1-2 Mil difference easily. Makes you wonder what in the world theyre doing in the paint booth. All four corners of each and every panel gets hit and a reading or two in the middle. Tailgate was a no-go, all readings were 2.2/2.3. Bottom of driver door was 2.5/2.6. Driver passenger was all just under 3 Mils. Roof and Hood had the 4 Mils and everything else was pretty much low 3s. I can post a report I did recently on a brand new Dodge Ram 1500 that had 3-4x the paint I have on my Maverick. It’ll make more sense.

Good job on cleaning your truck. Worth protecting but that shine is way too videogame for me. Is there a ceramic coating that doesn't look artificially glossy?
I personally like gloss and shine so I made it as glossy and shiny as possible and the overcast weather really shows that off. So take it with a grain of salt because I really tried to make this thing look like it’s melting. A ceramic coating is going to make your paint look glossier. Just like if you were to repaint your car it’s going to look glossier. More product on the surface equals more depth equals more reflection equals more shine and that all will increase the gloss and appearance of the paint.

Im not sure what Fords protocol is for the vehicles that have payed more for their paint but chances are it’s not much if a difference. I know someone who has had a few broncos in, one in Cactus Grey and the other in Area 51 and he said the paint was in the 2-3 Mil range as well so I wouldn’t count on it. Maybe with those rarer colors they have less to do so more time spent but I doubt it.
Thats tough to say. I know most ceramics have a shelf life of about a year, unopened and in a reasonable climate (60°-80°F) and thats pretty standard. I can’t say anything about the crystals, I think they’re referring to how the product crystallizes when it comes in contact with oxygen and warning that you shouldn’t use a product that has come into contact with oxygen. As far as frozen, I know detailers in the MidWest that can’t help but deal with this issue when receiving shipments of coatings. Let it sit at room temperature to defrost, no microwave or weird methods and I think you should be fine. At the end of the day, they have a reputation to uphold and you would think they would want you using the product right and not applying anything that was tainted. Follow their advice and good luck.

Yeah I have, at the shop I used to work at we used XPEL Fusion Plus over all of our XPEL PPF jobs. Solid stuff IMO.

If you know anyone in the Mass, CT or New England area area let us know. I plan on ordering a Maverick when they start taking orders again. I'd like to get something like this done and will see if they can skip anything they put on at the dealer.

Are they any good questions we could ask detailers to get an idea of the level of service they provide? I know there is a big range in auto detailers.

Thank you so much for so thoroughly explaining about ceramic coatings. Your truck is beautiful! Do you have a recommendation for someone in the Reno area? If not, and I make an appointment with you, how long do you need the vehicle?

I still don't have a build date but hoping to have it before winter.
