I picked up my Maverick first edition Hybrid five days ago, last night I Decided to install a cable and lock on the spare tire to attempt to prevent it from being stolen, or at least discourage someone from taking it. While I was underneath I noticed The spare tire is not a Michelin as are the other tires, and it’s not an 18 inch tire, it’s a 17 inch tire on a steel wheel. I can understand the steel wheel, no one gives you an extra alloy wheel now, but at least I should have an 18 inch tire. It is listed in the description as a full size spare and that’s what I expected. Technically it is a full size spare for somebody and some vehicle, just not for mine. The height of the tires are different, the 18 inch tire is 1 1/2 inches taller than the 17 inch tire at least they could’ve put the correct height tire in place. I verified this on tiresizes.com, i’m disappointed, in Fordā€˜s bad judgment, just trying to save a couple bucks, figuring we the customers are stupid.

Lots of threads on it, it’s a ā€œfull sizeā€ instead if a ā€œdonutā€ as a spare. It’s not a ā€œsame sizeā€ tire as what most people expect.

It's actually (in my opinion) a lie. At least it gives me a 17" rim and I can get a tire the same diameter as the others. You, on the other hand, truly got screwed. We both, and lots of others fell for a marketing ploy. I would have liked to know beforehand the actual size. Just didn't read enough in this forum.

I agree that this is really deceptive. Puzzles me that Ford would do this.

We had ordered the ā€œfull-size spareā€ option as well for $115, but got a call from our dealer on 3/10 that the we’d get the truck faster if we removed that option.

That’s when we learned through this forum that the ā€œfull-size spare tireā€ wasn’t the same size as the four tires that come on the truck anyway. So we had no problem dropping it from the order.

Apparently the real ā€œfull-sizeā€ tire and wheel won’t fit in the spare tire holding area….

And apparently, few car manufacturers provide /offer true ā€œfifth wheelā€ spare options anymore. It’s been a long time since I dealt with buying a new car, so of course thought ā€œfull-size spare tireā€ was really same size as other four wheels/tires.

But then, I’m from the day when you rotated your spare tire in whenever you rotated the tires….

Full size spare is just that, it’s not a donut you can drive 45mph max or whatever speed it says on the little donut that is only supposed to get you to the next exit and to a tire shop.

The full size spare is a full size tire that can be used for the rest of your trip. It’s not a matching wheel/tire combo it’s a 100 dollar drive for a week or two option until you have time to fix the tire which is nice to have especially if you are hauling or towing when you get a flat.

Now, I’m off the opinion it should be cheap and not worth stealing (steel wheel and cheapest non matching tire they can source) but it should be the same diameter. That’s where it doesn’t make sense to me, now if you have fwd and a flat on the front you need to move a good one from back to front and put the spare on the back.

Entry level vehicle, I’ll overlook it.

How many other vehicles get a "true" full size spare? Is it normal to get truly full size diameter on the F150's and the like?

My Subaru Outback Onyx XT has a matching full size spare wheel and tire. Outback Wilderness edition does as well.

It gives you a standard steel rim instead of a doughnut sized rim. My plan is to hit a local used tire place and find something decent in the correct size.

Some good and bad info here. Full size spare doesn't mean matching 5th wheel and tire. It means it's not a donut. Also, the size provided is within 3%, which is the industry standard, of the stock wheel and tire combo rolling diameter. Which means fully inflated outside diameter. And yes, a stock size can fit under the bed. People are using a 245/65R17 as a spare with no issues.

You paid extra for a larger donut wheel. The Full Size Spare is "Not Full Size"!
