Ain't that the Truth that first scratch or parking lot ding and the Shine wears off pretty quickly 🥺
Bought a brand-new Red Tacoma Truck in 1988 and with the truck came a voucher to fill the gas tank down the street from the dealer. Opened gas door, removed the cap and with the fresh cut keys in hand, scratched the side with a 3-inch-deep scratch. End of story.

There are a few reasons I bought the Maverick.
1) It has a bed
2) It gets good milage
3) It's cheap

Everytime I'm using that bed or at the gas station, I think I'll appreciate that I have it. Sure beats beats beating up my Forester by hauling rock in it.

The third item I probably won't appreciate until it's paid off. Not looking forward to another car payment...

Have bought a lot of vehicles over the years. The researching, the ordering, the waiting and finally the drive home from the dealership is where it peaks. After that, it's a few weeks of obsessively cleaning every speck of dirt and dust and looking back at it when you park. Then you get a minor scratch and spill a coffee and you just don't give a shi%$ anymore and it's just transportation.

Enjoy the wait
It's not like you're driving a $200k plus rolls royce or bentley. I'm gonna shit and eat in this thing as much as I can and then sell it to Carvana or Carmax.

I am one of those people who will tell you not to touch the paint or glass, that's what door handles are for...I don't want your fucking fingerprints on my car. Don't slam the door, this isn't a piece of foreign shit...etc.
When my kids were little, they weren't allowed to eat in the car, and could only have water, in case of spills.
I am like this will all my vehicles. I want them always to look their best. I could never own and drive a vehicle that looked and acted like a piece of shit.
A year ago I traded my 2007 Edge with 204,000 miles on it (I bought it new) for a 2021 Edge. The 2007 looked like it just came out of the showroom, inside and out. The dealer sold it in one day.
The only car I'll eat in is a rental. On a road trip, that means I make myself get out and sit down at a proper table. When my 5yo Focus was totaled recently, other than the damage from the airbags, the interior was basically spotless. The insurance company didn't even try to ding the value like they usually do (though the initial offer was lower than Caravan would've bought it for...). :)

The Focus I had before that was nearly spotless at 90,000 miles, then it got a new driver and the interior was soon stained all over. 🤦‍♂️

I still have my 1994 Chevy Silverado. I love it just as much now as i did when I specced it out and special ordered it. Sure she has some small dings and the paint isnt as perfect as it once was, but the feeling I get is still the same. They get old like we do. My 2007 mustang GT 4.6L 5 speed was also a special order vehicle. I love that one just as much.

My son and I are restoring a 1969 barracuda coupe. We are 3 years in. Almost done with all the major metal work on the shell. Main floor pan and quarter skins are what's left. After that, it goes onto the body rotisserie, so I can undercoat it with raptor liner, and plumb the fuel and brake lines.

This one is a bit of a twist. I was 1 year old when this car was new. Therefore I could not special order it. We are updating it with an overdrive transmission, and 4 wheel disc brakes. Other than that, it's a clean slate to play the option sheets, and build what we could have ordered back then.

Heres the goods on our 69 barracuda order. power steering, manual brakes, 2 speed wiper with manual wash, rallye instrument cluster with 150mph speedometer, and trip odometer, tachometer, sport steering wheel, console and bucket seats, A01 light package with hood mounted turn signals, illuminated ignition, glovebox light, ashtray light, map light, and trunk light. Woodgrain dash and console appliques. Scorch red exterior, black interior. Formula S package, black formula S side stripes and 340 call outs, 340 V8, 3.73 gears, sure grip differential, dual exhaust with bright tips. As a tip of the hat to the 1969 road runner A12 6 pack cars, the wheels are black painted 15x7 steelies with chrome lug nuts. 225-60R15 tires.

The Mav is a special order like all of them are. Time will tell on this one, but if its reliable, and does its job as advertised, it will win me over for a long time.

Nope, I keep my vehicles nice throughout there life. I am the guy you want to buy a used auto from! I am sick that someone hit my truck in a parking lot and I was far away from anyone. Going to be fixed Monday.
Tesla's Sentry mode is amazing for this exact issue. One day similar systems will be standard on every new vehicle.

I guess I have a different expectation. I'm 66 and never ever bought a new car, let alone ordered a custom build. I was disappointed that Inhad to get the XLT to get cruise, but added the driver assist on and impulse. So I have only owned used cars. In just could not stand the massive depreciation from simply driving a new car iff of the lit. Yes- I squeak when I walk. My wife has a brand new Chavette in '84 and it was a turd.

So my 3 YR old '02 Quad cab and 3 YR old Volt were great cars. In between I bought a 3 YR old Tacoma which is a very dependable vehicle but I never warmed to it. It is hard to get into and rides like anpig with bricks in a backpack. 3 yrs old was the newest I'd ever owned.

So I ordered the Mav Nov 3rd and I am still waiting (and hipeful). I know it won't depreciate much if it all. I expect the upside down mileage and know that unlike the Volt I will have to buy gas from time to time. The Tacoma got beter OMG than the Rams, but not much (14 vs 17). I am pretty excited.
Well, car experiences are very subjective but when we got married in 1980, we bought a brand new Chevette. It was slow, cheap, no air.... but For 85,000 miles it just started and got us to work every day. I snapped off the turn signal lever one day while I was climbing in (caught on my coat pocket) and the repair was $8. At the dealership. So, simplicity can be a good thing.
We also liked having a four speed manual trans.

New Vehicle Glow Wears off Fast.

When I was a young man in the 60s, the cars/trucks I owned were important to me. The glow never wore off as long as I owned them because they were so difficult to come by. I was also proud of our drag racing only cars. I worked on our cars and loved every minute of it. I participated in several engine swaps and enjoyed the challenge. We even put a 327 V8 in a '61 Lancer—talk about putting 100 lbs of potatoes in a 50 lb sack.

I had the pleasure to own a few iconic cars in the 60s. A 1953 Chrysler Windsor Convertible I drove in high school, a '63 426 Wedge/425 HP Plymouth Sport Fury I later also raced, and a '66 427/425 HP Vette we also raced. We ended it keeping the Vette for 11 years. As I looked back, there were extenuating reasons for selling, or I would still have each of them. Man those were some great cars and the glow never wore off of any of them.

Moving into the business world, cars/trucks took on a different role. They were transportation only without cool factor and I drove so many miles that it was necessary to trade every 2-3 years. Even then there were a few vehicles I loved. A 70's Duster 340-4 speed, an '82 Dodge D50, an '89 Caravan turbo 4 (fun little van, black with red pin stripping and tan interior), an 84 S-10, an '01 Sonoma SS, and an '03 Sonoma ZRX (my favorite). The glow never wore off of any of these as long as I had them. These were in addition to my regular business tools for transportation.

Then retirement and compromise buying only the practical transportation for my wife and I. We bought an '06 Patriot, '08 PT Cruiser we drove for 11 years, '19 Dodge Grand Caravan. I'm not sure there was ever any glow on these vehicles.

Last year I had decided to buy an older compact truck. Something like a lower mileage last generation Ranger ('12 or before), Dakota ('04 or before), Lightning ('03 or before) or an 03' Sonoma ZRX. I found several ridiculously low mileage examples of small sports truck and planned to spend around $20,000 to restore. I had just about decided to buy a 2000 Dakota RT with less than 1500 miles on it for about $24,000 which would only need minor restoration like hoses, rubber, etc.

But, I in January of last year I saw a rumor about Ford's new Courier and the renderings were similar to the Bronco Sport, which I liked. So, I started reading and reading and reading. The name Maverick was finally revealed. The more that was revealed the more I liked what I read. Then the rumors about the Maverick real design and price came around in the spring of '21. The more I saw the more I liked. As I viewed the camouflaged shots and the spy shots the more the idea of a restoration slipped from my mind. After June 6 of last year and the revelation, I knew I was going to buy a Maverick. I just to had decide which one and convince my wife.

I researched and researched the Maverick, did about a hundred different builds on Ford's web site. Finally the used car business went off the charts. Over the course of a few months our '19 Dodge Grand Caravan increased in value from $16,000 to $26,000. When I told my wife I could get a new truck that seated 5, got great gas mileage, and give her a check for $5000 to $7000, she was sold. I included her in the interior choice and color and we both decided on the XL Velocity Blue. Mostly because of the dark interior. Growing up with vehicles in the 60's when black interiors became popular it was the only decision for us. She loved the Red Mavericks, but didn't want the interior that came with it.

Having ordered several vehicles over the years, I was comfortable with the process, so, I ordered on Oct. 6, and we picked it up on Nov. 10. Would have loved to have a First Edition model but didn't want to wait on the projected build dates. A big part of our decision to order an XL was also based on availability of build parts.

I have been so pleased with this truck. Is it faultless? No—certainly not. But, the faults are minor and make no difference since it is something I love and it meets our needs so very well. We've had our truck for almost 4 months. I love tinkering with it. I had installed a SiriusXM Commander Touch and the tuner module was stuck in on top of the center AC Vents with velcro. I had finally ordered a vent mount for the tuner module and yesterday afternoon I installed the vent mount on the driver's left side AC Vent and rerouted the wire to the control module near the fuse panel on the driver's right side. Yeah, I spent four hours on a 15 minute installation, but enjoyed every minute.

I have so much more planned for this little Maverick XL including Cruise, maybe adding Sync 4, leather seats, etc. Lost glow—no way! Now, if I could talk my wife out of the check she got for selling the Grand Caravan...

As for new vehicles, for most of my life I have had two cars, one to drive to work and the "family car", or "the good car". I learned that if you are going to keep a car 3 or 4 years and then sell it because you just have to have the new version, then by all means, buy used cars.
But if you know what you like, and you know you won't change your mind about a vehicle, then I prefer buying new. I had my 2001 F150 Supercrew for 15 years, sold it to my son in law. I gave him a good deal - told him "pay the sales tax on my Expedition ($3300) and you can have it". 6 years later and he still has it. He's a Mercedes master tech, but he keeps the pickup for when he needs a truck.
After almost six years, I still love the Expedition, still love the color (you just about have to order a vehicle if you want GREEN), the interior, the options. I'm not wealthy but I doubled down a little and paid it off after 4.5 years so now it's mine for the next 9 or 10 years free of charge. If and when it dies, I don't think I'll be able to order a gas-powered large SUV like that, so I think I'd better keep it going as long as possible.
In the end, they are just material possessions, but our material possessions tend to tell people a lot about a person. How they are cared for says a lot. Whether or not we're able to stay satisfied with what we have. I guess it's all part of being happy with Life.
Peace out, brothers!

It's not a 50k+ luxury truck. It's one that starts around 21.5k. It's made cheaply so it can be a daily commuter with great gas mileage. People complaining about the cheap materials and paint don't even realize that the average new vehicle price in America now is 40k, and the Maverick isn't anywhere near it. You get what you pay for...expect even with its short comings, it's still a better deal for what you get than nearly any other vehicle out there.

Yes on the scratch, leaving it dirty etc.... but there are still high points to come after the glow is gone!
I put new tires on my wife's Lexus with 80,000 miles a couple month back and spent the money on top of the line Michelins - Every time I drive that car now I smile - just rolls down the road so nice! Maybe when the factory tires need to be replaced on my yet to be delivered XL I'll buy up and really be smile every time I drive it? ALSO I already know that trips to the dump will make me super happy to have all 4.5' available!

Agreed. Although I have to add that, in my experience, the law of diminishing returns is super strong with cars as they get more expensive. I traded a Kia Soul that I paid $13,500 for in on a $65,000 E-class.. I might have enjoyed the E more, but not $50k more by a long long shot.

So our plan is that our Genesis G70 is our last car that will cost more than about $35,000 new.

A friend of mine suggests when you get a new vehicle home, just turn a few kids loose in the back seat with a box of markers. It cures that new vehicle anxiety right away and you can get back to business.
Just replace the new car smell with the smell of a farm so you know it's a work truck and can get back to using it as such.

I have had a First Editon rapid red hybrid on order since Jul 12.. Have even given some thought about storing it immediately as advised by members of a classic car group. Just start it up every week or so and may drive it around the block now and then. YEH!!!!!! RIGHT!!!!!
