Ford had "instaclear" windshields in the late 1980s. These were on select ford, lincoln, mercury products. Expensive glass to replace, they had a pinkish purplish cast to them from the outside, and worked great. Old tech.

Real simple solution if you dont like the tailgate lock. Remove the inside panel to the tailgate to get access to the lock/unlock solenoid, and un plug it. Then it will never lock and unlock with the doors. My key fob stays on a climber's D ring with my other keys and attached to my pants belt...

I checked under the dash in my XLT, and the holes to snap the footwell ambient lights in are there just waiting for me to pop them in and wire them up. I am betting the XL has them as well.
