It did. Maybe 1 mpg better at 70. Actually worse at 75. Just save the money and stick with 87.

I know it's not exactly on your topic, but the EcoBoost really isn't different than your results when I used 92 octane for a full tank. Although maybe a barely noticeable acceleration improvement. Not worth the price difference.

I owned a 2013 Prius and tried using 93 vs 87 and E0 vs E10 and found out that the difference in price per gallon vs the difference in milage wasn't worth the expense. I stuck with 87 octane gas. I plan on using 87 octane whenever I get my XL hybrid.

Ford uses OAR (Octane adjust ratio) and it takes time for the computer to adjust the fueling/timing based on octane. MY GTI has a similar system and its a noticeable difference. 93 to a E30 mix is a pretty good improvement. Its much snappier. I will be trying different things with my Maverick to find its happy spot on a stock tune.

I would attribute the 1 mpg increase to something other than the gas. The hybrid doesn't have enough cylinder pressure (heat) to merit any benefit from increased octane, and will most likely lose efficiency with higher octane, as you experienced with the higher speed.

I have driven all over. I find that East of the Mississippi you find 93 more often, and west 91. It's weird and I don't know why. Hell, I didn't even know 85 was a thing until I stopped over in Aurora Co in April. (Something to do with altitude).

Some good information about octane, including a paragraph on altitude (relevant to people like me in Colorado).

What is 85 octane, and is it safe to use in my vehicle?
The sale of 85 octane fuel was originally allowed in high-elevation regions—where the barometric pressure is lower—because it was cheaper and because most carbureted engines tolerated it fairly well. This is not true for modern gasoline engines. So, unless you have an older vehicle with a carbureted engine, you should use the manufacturer-recommended fuel for your vehicle, even where 85 octane fuel is available.

I still used 87, but I was shocked. I also never drove through the Denver area before because you had to get a special permit to even drive through with a pit bull type dog. (They voted out the ban last year).

Cinder wasn't allowed, so I went around.
