l took delivery of my Maverick XL 2.0L AWD about 1 month ago. I bought a dealer ordered XL that was ”in transit” to the dealer. I did not have any input on the options. I noticed that I did not have the “full size spare”, equipped with the donut. I asked the salesman if he could order a full size spare for me. He got back to me the next day telling me that after speaking with the parts manager it would be $908. He sent me a proposed invoice:

NZ6Z-1015-A (Wheel Assembly) $709.29
9L3Z-1700-A (Kit Valve) $18.99
9002-1549936-0000 (225/65R17) $129
TOTAL-$908.71

I assumed, as did the salesman that the “wheel assembly” was the cantilevered bracket the spare attached to. I find it surprising that you could not just swap out the donut for a full size spare……maybe you just can. Not really a priority, I have only needed a spare 2Xs in 40 years of driving. The donut was sufficient and will still be.

Hmm, I got the so-called full size spare with my order, but now I kind of wonder why I did. Like OP, I have only needed the spare once in 35 years on the road, and my next stop after that one flat was a tire shop, so the donut sufficed. It does seem to me that one could go by a used tire place and source a correct size tire and rim for cheap. Ehh, whatever. I have already spent more time thinking about spare tires than I have used spare tires in my life. I'm done.

Full size spare came with the 4k tow package ($800)... Sounds like your getting ripped.

for that money, you can go to tirerack and get 4 new rims, tires, and tpms sensors assembled and ready to bolt on. Just keep a take off as your spare.

Do you guys have FWD or AWD? I'm new to AWD (current DD is Jeep with full size spare), but read a lot about this before ordering my XL AWD with the full size spare. 2 things to note: 1) you can do 5 wheel tire rotation if your spare is same as your other 4 wheels (can't with donut or non-similar tire on F/S spare rim) and 2) for AWD it's not recommended to drive any extended distance with donut on there because of some parameters related to the AWD system. For me, I ordered the F/S on my XL AWD and will wear out the OEM tires on steelies and buy 5 new tires when needed so I can do 5 wheel rotations. The $115.00 for F/S didn't bother me in the big picture of purchasing. YMMV

It's not listed on build & price details in 4k tow and I had to add my FS even though I have 4k tow selected. Are you sure you aren't confusing 4k tow package with FX-4?

I didn’t get ripped because I did not buy the $900 spare. As I stated I have needed a spare twice in 40 years of driving. One of my compact cars in the late 1980s came with a can of Fix-It-Flat…….that was your spare. A donut was an upgrade option.

The best way to avoid flats is with quality tires. I do a lot of gravel in the summers and everytime I buy a new vehicle I tell myself I am going to get some use out out of the stock tires before I upgrade. Last time I made it a couple weeks and got a flat on a well maintained gravel road... So new tires it was. I now carry a flat repair kit and pump that I would sooner use than use the donut on the Maverick if possible. I will probably not be on the gravel much with this truck (have beater for that) and once again I am trying to get some use out of stock tires. Lets see how long they last before I get fed up.

FYI - in the last week of December discount tire announced the purchase of Tire Rack.

Problem with the Maverick is the the full size tire is still smaller than the other tires

I believe p/n NZ6Z-1015-A (Wheel Assembly) $709.29 is the steel wheel itself.

You can buy a takeoff steel wheel off the marketplace on this forum for way less than $700. Even if you have to pay to have it shipped, with or without a tire, you should be able to get yourself set up with a full size spare for a fraction of the number quoted by the dealer.

According to parts.ford.com, they're trying to charge you way over MSRP ($567.43) for that wheel. OEM wheels are $$$ for replacements. Is it even a steel wheel or is it the same as the other 4?

IIRC the "full size" spare isn't really full size. It's just bigger than the donut...

How would u plan on getting home if u were out of state, u get a flat on a Sunday? Perhaps camping, you’re just ready to make the long ride home. u might get lucky&be able to get AAA to get there in 5hours, most service stations will be closed? Even w/ a doughnut what would happen to an all wheel drive system w/ a mismatch size tire that you’re not supposed to go ^50 mph?

I drive a tractor trailer for a living…..you get used to reacting as the situation dictates. We all figure it out.
