If the Fathom had F-150 quality seats, and the range of a silverado EV, that would get me to contemplate a switch.

My worst trip is towing a 6x10 box trailer 184 miles, on the highway at 65-70 MPH. Charging options are non existent, the only chargers available are slow 30-40kW chargers at dealerships that charge upwards of $1 per kWh (our home rate is $0.09 per kWh), and they are mostly in the wrong directions and would increase the total trip mileage to over 220 miles. The F-150 lightning had insufficient range to hit this target, only the silverado EV could do it, but I dont need anything that big. Oh, and give us buttons. Like the F-150 still has, for its climate controls.

Of course, I still dont have a garage to charge it in, so that would have to be built first.

You asked

Go Figure- The Motor City area (michigan) ;) Not only do the rates keep climbing - in the name of upgrading the grid - it goes down routinely for thousands. Glad your grid is solid.

DTE Power Outage: Causes & Home Preparation Tips

Are DTE Power Outages Common?
Yes, DTE electricity outages are common enough that regular preparation makes sense. DTE maintains a dedicated outage center, an interactive outage map, address-based outage status tools, and storm safety guidance, all of which reflect the reality that outages are a recurring issue for customers in its service area.

And we've had many major storms in the last two weeks with no failures near me.

Looking forward to learning more about the Fathom. An electric truck is interesting.

But it may not work for me. I plan on towing a small travel trailer, and doing so depletes
the battery and reduces the range. Same when carrying a heavy payload. At least that's
what I learned from reading the Rivian forums.

As they say time will tell.
I expect that the Fathom won't be set up for hardcore towing. To get decent towing range on an EV you need a huge battery, which seems the opposite of what Ford is trying to do with the Fathom.

By all means expect a $30k truck to have the same towing range as a $100k truck with 3x the battery size

Small EV's

Bolt
Leaf
Slate
Maybe Phantom

can expect 4 miles per kWh in mild weather and half that in the worst of the worst weather.

Paying top of the scale 50 cents per kWh = $5 gas at 40 MPG

Paying USA average price of 18.44 cents per kWH = $1.84 gas at 40 MPG.

Paying lowest possible residential rate in the USA = $1.00 gas at 40 MPG.

Paying the average commercial rate in the USA = $0.50 gas at 40 MPG. Or put another way 400 miles per $5.

Charging at work makes sense for you and is dirt cheap for the employer when they get commercial rates. And most do if the business is using over 1000 kW (1 MW).

I read 1500 lbs tow capacity initially. Slate upped theirs to 2000 lbs so Ford may match.

As batteries get cheaper, a Maverick plug-in with 50 miles EV range and AWD w/ 4k tow will be a pretty compelling vehicle.

You asked what would make us consider switching to a Fathom, and I responded.

I have no use for a 200 mile range go kart that cant tow a small trailer without being utterly handicapped. And I will keep pressuring for longer ranges at lower prices, usable range should not be the territory of the elite who can afford $100k disposable appliances.

If you want usable range, you need a hybrid or conventional powertrain. If you only have $30K to spend, your options are limited in every way.

I could say the same thin about my 1992 Ranger. But the simple fact of life is prices go up, period. As the cost to produce goes up the cost to the buyer goes up. No one can buy a brand new 2022 today so the price difference is moot. Personally I waited and bought a 2024 leftover. And I would NEVER order and wait over a year for any vehicle.
Us guys that ordered their Mav back in 21 got a great deal my first Mav was a FX4, I waited over 8 months, it turned out to be a great truck, am on number 3 now went from gas to hybrid back to gas, I love my new lobo and not going to give it up, but there are advantages to buying this new truck, this is just the beginning, ford is going to use this as a test case and build more models off this vehicle if it works out and the price is going up!!
I would be the perfect customer for this truck; I only drive 5/10 miles a day, I rarely do any long-distance trips and can charge from my home, the thing is what little driving I do I enjoy driving, when I see people lined up at charging stations some reading books or on the phone waiting, that's not me, what happens on long trips 100/200 miles in service areas will there be enough chargers? how long is the wait? My supermarket has 1 charging station the mall has 4, Target has 3/4.
Ill take my chances with gas for a few more years and see what happens.

I can’t wait to buy my 1st 500 mile range EV. The average vehicle selling price should be around $100k by then.

Maverick vs Fathom: What Makes You Switch?
I am retired and only drive around 4,000 miles a year. A lot of short 1-2 mile trips and sometimes a few longer ones of 125 miles round trip.

My reasons to switch are these:

1. No more stopping at a gas station to fill up

2. much quieter driving (no more noise from an ICE engine)

3. much peppier, more fun to drive

4. much lower maintenance costs (no oil changes, emission checks, spark plugs)

5. I can charge at home in my garage with a level 2 charger, no need to charge elsewhere

6. I never tow

Not being a member of the Truck of the Month Club perhaps is part of the reason why I can't
Fathom Why I Would Switch From My Maverick.
Will it include chargers that are closer than 50 miles away?
Likely not.
What you have no electricity where you live

Remember, the Fathom will be up against the Gen 2 Maverick (2028?) . I'm sure the G2 Maverick will have 2 interior grades and many more stand-alone options for higher trims.
2027 Maverick XL already costs $30K with destination charge so the Fathom is a much better deal in terms of features over the current Maverick so I don't expect the 2028 Maverick to be any better.
