The Rivian (which is shipping -- there are customers who have received their trucks already) is nice, and pretty deserving as it's the first electric truck to get to market.

The category was a pretty weird one though, like the Maverick and Rivian aren't competing for the same customers. No one is cross shopping the two. Like other than the truck bed, are these two things even in the same category? XD

I can't buy a hybrid Maverick and drive it either soooo?

If I ran a publication then yes I would say "hey this is great but while it is technically for sale in 2021, they aren't delivery orders en masse yet so I am not considering it for the best of 2021" but do I think someone is crappy for not doing the same? nah.
It's actually the 2022 Truck of the Year Award.

I'm not surprised, journalists are all googly eyes about EV right now. The Rivian is an impressive truck, but like all EV the range/charging limitations make it a nogo for me... Maybe if I lived in the city I would take EVs more seriously. Not to mention the price is far above what I will be able to afford for a long time!

I do feel like MT needs to have difference classes of awards if people want to take it seriously. Maverick is a compact ICE or Hybrid truck, Rivian is a full size EV... not much of a comparison there.

Say it isn't so!

Sadly the high-price Rivian was chosen by MotorTrend. While these awards are nice to see, it does not predict how well a particular vehicle does in the marketplace, or how long-term their reliability is, etc. See this attached article for more.

I read many years ago that MotorTrend took into consideration the manufacturers marketing strategy beforehand (if they were awarded the title), and this entered into MT's final decsion. I'd bet Rivian has promised MotorTend a huge campaign that highlights MotorTrend in their advertisements. Maybe Ford didn't want to pay-up to get the award.

I'm still going to wait for my Maverick to be build and sold to me!

Around here a magazine publishes a "top professionals" issue every year with doctors and lawyers and stuff. It's pay to play and now when I see it I wonder why they need so much publicity if they are really that great.

Rivians are on the road, getting built and delivered. The price of a Rivian isn't that much different that a fully loaded F-150 gas and the range isn't that much different either. Ford owns a healthy percentage of Rivian, it's NOT vaporware.

That’s like giving man of the year to big foot. You’ve seen pictures and have read about him but no one has ever really seen one.
I have seen several around here... A couple with real plates instead of the manufacturer plates that not for sale examples get.

I also have several friends/former coworkers who now work for Rivian. They are very excited about getting theirs.

If you are in any way comparing availability of Maverick Hybrid and the Rivian. Sorry you are way far off base.

You can read on this forum members taking delivery and giving opinions.

Maybe provide a link of a customer taking delivery of a Rivian. So we can compare.
If its not for sale should not even be any mention.

The Rivian Headquarters are very close to work, so I see the trucks and vans constantly. I dig them.

I met a woman online that works is an Engineer for Ford Performance, her husband works for Rivian. They drove their R1T towing their Shelby GT Mustang racecar from Detroit to Orange County CA and documented on Instagram. (@gideontherivian). Pretty cool truck.

That being said, I'll stick to the Maverick as I need the flexibility the hybrid offers. Plus I just can't afford the Mach E or R1T.

The storage capabilities is an innovation of its own. 0-60 3 sec. What fun!

Supply issues vs. not in production are two different situations. There are plenty of Ecoboost Mavs on the road and the Hybrids are popping up now too.

Sooo...

That said, the Rivan is pretty bad! Not hating on it as far as concept.

Try again..
Dang, it's a good thing that Rivians are also in production :ROFLMAO:

Sure they've only produced a couple hundred or so but we are starting to split hairs at that point. If the point is that a vehicle is unavailable then it really doesn't matter if they make 200 or 2,000 if the vast majority of orders aren't filled yet I'd call it a wash.

Personally I wouldn't include a vehicle where the base version isn't available. It is also worth mentioning that if someone read an article about the truck of the year and went to a Ford Dealer, they'd be told it is unavailable for the model year which to me is the thrust of the point.

I'll be making a road trip from Tucson to Dallas before Christmas (~1000 miles). Pretty much any ICE vehicle could make this trip with a few quick stops for gas. The Truck of the Year would leave me stranded somewhere in New Mexico, and that's assuming it was fully charged to begin with.
I wasn't a fan of all electric vehicles until I learned about the Maverick and then ordered one. It's the best of both worlds, you don't have to worry about charging it up and or running out of charge. Plus after reading the performance comparing with the EcoBoost I'm super excided. After watching the video they even stated that the Ford all electric Lighting was bigger and cost way less, seriously. You can purchase (3) Mavericks for the price of one Rivian, MAVERICK should have taken the award!

Who cares? Another junk award that was also "awarded" to the Ford Probe, Renault Alliance and Plymouth Horizon (among other crap cars)? Not impressed.
