I agree. But I'm also aware that 0-60 in 3 seconds is becoming the new normal with EV's so -- These may be the slowest trucks on the planet soon... lol
Yeah on luxury EVs. The cheapest EVs start at about $30K, and for those even sporty ones like the 22 Mini Cooper SE clock in at 6 seconds 0-60mph. Also while EVs are fast 0-60mph, they tend to lose steam for passing on the highway. The SE is the quickest Mini 0-60mph, yet its not any faster in the 1/4 mile for example, and the extra weight of the battery pack makes it slower than a standard Cooper S in slalom and skidpad.

For example here's a 22 Nissan Leaf and you can see past 70kph the needle slows down its climb quite a bit, even though its 0-60mph time of 6.9 seconds isn't bad:

The all new for 22 Mazda MX-30 sprints to 60mph in 9 seconds. So while Tesla can wow with their plad speed and what not, I think people are in for a rude awakening when EVs lose their heavy subsidies and we start seeing more mainstream affordable ones that are quite slow vacuum cleaners.

People may think I'm full of :poop: , but I still think the FWD ecoboost will outrun a AWD ecoboost in the 1/4 mile. Less weight and driveline losses. As long as the tires aren't complete garbage, it'll hook up well enough as the turbo takes a second to spool anyway and so smooths out the launch.
I'm really impressed with the response from the ecoboost with FWD. My last car was a Subaru WRX and I was afraid there would be a lag. Granted, the Mav doesn't launch like like a scalded cat and grip like Velcro. I'm a little disappointed with the 109 mph limiter (but that can be addressed another time) .. All in all, I am pleased with the Maverick. Comfortable, peppy, handles well and able to haul stuff when the need arises.

Agreed, i like that it has a little pep in its step, but it’s not overall what I ordered one for

The AWD will almost always launch better. Look at test comparisons of many FWD vs AWD SUVs that are otherwise the same. You also need to calculate gear ratio. What is the final ratio of a FWD 2.0? The AWD have two choices, the 4k being quicker because of a 3.81 vs. 3.63

AWD only helps if you're traction limited, which can happen if you brake boost or have some sort of launch control, but as shown with the Escape in the above video, the FWD isn't really traction limited on launch with only 250hp and a turbo that has to spool up making the launch softer. I think that Santa Cruz likely would have been faster too had they chosen a SEL Premium with its lighter 18" wheels and in FWD.

Speaking of Hyundai, that's why Hyundai for example chose FWD for many of their N and N-Line performance models over AWD, as the extra driveline losses and weight negated the benefit and added extra cost. The Veloster N and Kona N models, both FWD even though the Kona is offered in AWD as well in other trims, launch pretty dang hard even with 275hp at 4.8 seconds and 1/4 mile in 13.4seconds. Granted 275hp is probably the limit for FWD, but the Ecoboost is well under that.

Also from an economic standpoint, AWD on the ecoboost is a whopping $3.3K option, which saves you money you could put toward other go-fast goodies like a chip and a nice wheel/tire package. I'm kind of partial to the FLOW ONE RACE SPEC F5 wrapped in Sumitomo HTR A/S P03. After selling stock takeoffs (or keeping them as winter tires), would still have plenty left over.

We had this debate with the Chargers, and finally a few guys drag raced the 5.7 V8 RWD vs V8 AWD, and sure enough the RWD pulls ahead unless the launch is botched. Granted that's RWD, not FWD, but its also more horsepower.

If you look closely in the back you can see the Hybrid Maverick getting lapped lol

Off the top of my head I believe it's like +~1k for the 2.0, and then +~2k for the AWD. Total of the 3.3k for both, since you cant get AWD without the 2.0. Just the 2.0 is extremely inexpensive and worthwhile upgrade IMO. Unless you are wanting the hybrid mileage of course.

Tires can make all the difference in the world when you launch off the line. That is what gives you the grip to fling yourself off the line. It doesn't matter what engine or drivetrain you have if you have cheap tires that just slide around when you mash the go pedal. AWD helps grip through twisty corners and rough roads. Never compromise on the tires.

Oh yeah, you're right, build tool is just a bit dumb. Even when you have Ecoboost pre-selected, it shows the AWD option as $3.3K but the price only changes from $28,715 to $30,935, a $2.2K option.

It's not too inexpensive if you're considering TCO. Over 10 years it's likely to cost you $8-10K, with no significant contribution to functionality.

I mean weight is something for sure, but as far as driveline losses it’s more complicated than that. It’s going to engage all 4 wheels at the dig which gives it an advantage over 2wd, and then at a certain speed since there’s no loss of traction it disengages to allow the rear to spin freely. We know both of these as a fact since people have posted faster AWD 0-60, and it is a part time not full time AWD.

Good point on disengaging the AWD, but where have you seen a FWD and AWD Ecoboost Maverick drag racing? Was that with or without brake boosting? With out brake boosting, you can see on the FWD Escape Ecoboost video I posted that its not peeling out at launch.

Quite honestly I don’t see the point with this test. You have vehicles that are competing in completely different categories for different buyers. Not to mention $50K differences in price. And Roman is the worst car reviewer I’ve had the displeasure of watching. His kid is 10x better.
