This was entirely predictable…

Canada originally put the Chinese EV tariffs on at the behest of the US, ostensibly to protect the integrated North American auto industry. Then the US turns around and threatens that integrated industry with high tariffs and other threats, even sovereignty. Canada has rightly concluded the US is no longer a friend and reliable trading partner, so no wonder they have to start dealing with others, including American foes like China.

Going out of our way to pick fights with Canada, of all places, does not seem very smart, especially when it results in in bringing China right to our doorstep.

Pretty much nailed it, IMO. If someone in Texas understands the situation to this extent, I guess there's hope for improvement someday ...

Didn't take long for this to get political, so I won't be following it.
Considering the entire premise of the thread involves global and local politics, you're right - it didn't take long.

It started that way.

I’m a Canuck. Will not buy anything unless it’s built in Mexico/USA/Canada as per the CUSMA deal. If that deal goes sour, I’ll buy whatever gets me to work in the morning.

The CMA is the lobby group for GM, Ford and Stellantis, so yeah, predictable since they know Canadians will now buy less American cars.

In the US Ford and GM are lobbying to not break up the integrated US/Canada car market, so it will be interesting to see how that goes.
Hard to see how the damage done can be reversed now, although we have to be honest here that Ford, GM, and Stellantis don't care at all about little EVs they are losing money hand over fist on, they care about protecting their market share of full size diesel trucks in Canada that are very high margin.

Commenting as an American, the only thing that would concern me with a Chinese EV,
Commenting as an American, why In the world would any American support a communist regime ? We should buy as little as possible from them, period.

I know I know that’s Impossible, At least Tesla is An American Company that out Scorsese's as little as possible.
I guess Canada can’t help it, but we can. Buy Ford.

For the same reason Americans buy Japanese or German cars and other goods....Canada and UK are Socialist governed...should we not be buying from them as well? Vietnam is a trading partner and also a Communist regime, yet their products are readily sold here and Americans buy their products as well. I try to buy as "American" as possible (as I look at my Maverick in the garage) but at the end of the day, as an American, I will spend my money as I see fit.

I tend to shy away from Chinese built items since they are usually crap....but hey, lots of crap is also made here.

As to the subject of this thread, as a Canadian I have no interest in Chinese EVs. Range is just as crappy as all the American and European EVs. I’ll be sticking with a hybrid, it just makes more sense. That said I will likely avoid buying from an American brand, or a vehicle made in the USA when the time comes as well. The Maverick hasn’t given me awe inspiring confidence in the engineering abilities of American brands.

FWIW, if Alberta votes to leave...
Nobody will miss America 2.0… I mean Alberta If they leave. It’s very unlikely anyway, if the poles are anything to go by. They are as likely to leave as Quebec. All bark and no bite.

Do you understand what Socialist means?

It's an ideology, not a political system - it only means that the government policy generally favors the benefit of all over the benefit of a few (the elite) ...

The government is still democratically elected and the economic system is capitalist, but we lean towards programs that increase social equality (public health insurance, welfare, etc) over straight-up capitalist goals like having the lowest possible taxes.

It really puzzles me when people mention socialism like it's some form of autocratic communism. All of western Europe, Scandinavia, Aus/NZ are socialist and they're not bad places to live according to most metrics

I didn't see the original post as political. I saw it as a discussion of whether or not the low cost of an EV would incentivize Canadians to buy it in light of climate and charging issues. I suppose we saw it differently because of our backgrounds and areas of interest. Point being, I do not think there was any premise to the thread because I did not see the OP drawing any conclusion to information presented. I only saw some posts making it a political issue. Yes, I am an analytical creature (emphasis on anal  ). Have a good day.
