On the inside of the gas door of my 2024 Lariat, there is a tag that says "87+". The difference in price between 87 and 93 octane (only option) in my area is 50+ cents. Excuse me if I feel guilty and cheat once in a while.

When using 87 octane in the 2.0L EcoBoost the ECU retards timing to reduce engine knock. This results, among other things, in more unburned fuel being exhausted from the engine; thus causing the GPF to work harder. Not a good thing. I was planning to use 91 octane for other reasons; but since I am very concerned about having a GPF, and I do lots of city driving; for sure I will use 91 octane in my new Maverick Ecoboost.
Do You already have Your Eco Boost Maverick? If so did You look underneath it to see if it has the GPF?

yep it has one, you can also lift the hood, there is an EPA emissions sticker on the underside which will indicate if GPF (and there is)

I hope you are correct; and everything works
He's 100% correct. The 02 sensors measure the oxygen content of the exhaust and adjuststs the fuel mixture to where the exhaust oxygen content is evidence of approximately a 14.5 to 1 air/fuel ratio. If it deviates it quickly richens or leans out the mixture until the right ratio is reached which indicates proper combustion

A few posts above have indicated that the amount of detergent additives in Top Tier gasoline increases with octane. In reality, all grades have the same additive package. From Google:

"Top Tier gasoline isn't about higher octane; it's about superior detergent additives, mandated by major automakers (like GM, Honda, Toyota, BMW) to keep engines cleaner than EPA minimums, preventing carbon buildup for better efficiency and longevity, available across all octane levels (regular, mid, premium) with brands displaying the TOP TIER™ logo."

We use 93 octane Top Tier, but only because we drive so little that it doesn't add up to much and we get the extra hp/torque (about +10%). If we were driving a lot I'd consider using 87 since the detergent level is the same.

Exxon 89 octane has a higher concentration of detergent than their 87 octane. 91 octane has a higher concentration over 89 octane.

89 octane is blended at the pump by using 87 octane & 91 octane.

91 octane has a higher concentration of detergent than 87 octane.

Just fyi. I imagine the other Top Tier stations do the same type of blending.

I use 91 octane in my 2.0 EB for added hp - getting the higher percentage of the same additive package that the 87 octane gets is a bonus.

I’m going to swap to Top Tier Plus when it becomes available in my neck of the woods. Don’t drive much or far (which is a dirtier), so my Maverick will be fed the highest percentage of “special sauce”:)

Top Tier:
https://www.toptiergas.com/consumer-faqs/

"Keeping things simple for consumers, when a participating retailer sells Top Tier fuel, all octane grades from regular to premium gasoline and diesel must adhere to the Top Tier standards. So it’s not necessary for drivers to upgrade to premium to gain the cleansing benefits."

Thanks for the link.

Top Tier gasoline doesn't have different detergent level ratings for the different octane ratings it's available in. Nice to know.

Here are the differences between using 93 octane vs 91 octane vs 87 octane in the Maverick EB…

87…230-240hp
91…250hp
93…250hp+ with a Tune

87 Additive…Top Tier
91 Additive…more Top Tier
93 Additive…Top Tier +

87 MPG…Ok
91 MPG…0.5 to 1 mpg better
93 MPG...0.5 to 1mpg more??
