Ohio Plate Renewal - BMV Didn't Catch Hybrid

Here in the wonderful state of Ohio - they charge $100 annually for a hybrid, $150 for plug in, and $200 for an EV.

When I switched from my Bronco to a Model 3 i went to get the plates switched and the lovely man behind the counter told me to go home and renew my registration for the plates for as long as I could while it was still a Bronco so I would avoid the $200 annual fee. Not all heroes wear capes....

Well the state closed that loophole when I came back to the 2025 Maverick AWD Hybrid and you cannot renew/extend registration until 60 days before expiration.

HOWEVER - they did not catch that my Maverick is a hybrid - it is just registered as a non-commercial gasoline truck. VIN# is correct but not sure if it really tells them that it is a Hybrid.

Anyhow, I took advantage of their snafu and I renewed my plates through 11/2030 for $355 instead of $855 - and I'm feeling really good about it!!

EDIT: Well @DS_Ohio provided the answer. Hybrid trucks are not subject to the fee in Ohio!

My Maverick gets worse MPG than my Civic did so I'm still paying more gas tax than I would have been should I have kept driving the Civic!

I'm 41 and the roads in Ohio have sucked for as long as I can remember.

I'd tend to agree with you, but not as stark of a difference as going east on I90 out of Cleveland and into PA. Not that Ohio roads are excellent by any stretch of the imagination but as soon as you hit the PA state line it is an immediate difference in the conditions. PA is awful.

I am not at all opposed to a fee for Plug in hybrids and electric vehicles. However the fee should be miles driven based and charge the state gas tax per that mile.

Many drivers are not logging enough miles annually and are now paying more than their gas only counterparts.

The VIN does indicate hybrid.
The 8th position in the VIN is the engine type, specifically.

They might catch it down the road. And you will get a "correction" bill.

One way to do it would be to charge $X per kWh. That would be easy enough to do with commercial chargers -- and going forward have EVs and plug-in hybrids self-report miles traveled and/or kWh used.

Another option would be for owners to report miles traveled, which could be confirmed whenever shops entered the VIN and odometer reading.

One thing we do NOT need are toll roads, especially HOT/Lexus Lanes built by corporations on public right-of-way and auctioned off in real time to the wealthiest motorists.

The fuel tax has worked fine for decades, but it hasn't been increased for over 30 years! It must at least keep up with inflation. No one likes taxes but we do like smooth roads, and the average $0.50/gallon fuel tax works out to about 2 cents per mile with a 25 mpg vehicle -- as opposed to $2++ per mile to use Lexus Lanes.

The surcharge is for passenger vehicles. The Mav is registered as a "Light Non-Commercial Truck – up to 3/4 ton capacity", so they didn't miss anything. $46.00/year
