South Carolina

Electric vehicles$120 + registration fee
Hybrids$60 + registration fee
Divide those numbers in half for an annual figure. SC has a two year registration period. I have calculated these numbers out for hybrid and they seem pretty fair. Against the extra weight of a full EV and no gas use at all; perhaps the state loses on the EV fee.

Yup. In Oregon the more efficient, the more you pay to title and register it.

Maybe states should look at EPA mpg ratings and base the taxes (fees) on that. Although Florida doesn't charge an extra tax on hybrids, why should I pay one on my Maverick with an EPA rating of 37 mpg combined, yet, a Hyundai Elantra SE, which has the same EPA rating, wouldn't?
Looks like Oregon already does this.

A lot of the cost is based on the additional RTA tax, which is a small subsection of the 3 biggest counties in Washington. It's to pay for light rail.

I don't think there's an extra charge for hybrids, but I believe there may be for EVs.
bgn, I don't have it right in front of me, but there is an extra charge for hybrids here in WA ... it's $75.00/year for hybrids and $150.00 for EVs, I believe ....

Coming in Texas Sept 1, 2023. NOTE: the initial $400 is because in Texas the initial registration.n is for two years and the renewals thereafter are annually. The legislature is working on a weight based milage tax with credits for fuel taxes paid most likely to be computed based on EPA window sticker accessed by vin#. They got a lot of poop shoveling yet to do. Following is what starts this Sept.
  • EV owners in Texas will have to pay $400 to register their vehicles.
  • Renewal registrations will be $200.
  • Registration fee goes toward highway costs to supplement the gas tax.

As more Texas drivers purchase electric vehicles, Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill that replaces lost gas-tax income. To remedy the situation, Abbott signed the $400 new EV registration bill known as Senate Bill 505, which goes into effect on September 1, 2023.
I am sure that will work well.

That's it? 😉

I pay something like $410 on registration a year, plus some of the highest per-gallon taxes and some of the most expensive gas in the country here in good ole Washington. 😒
Washington Sales tax is the worst..well, except California..

this week Wifey was in the DMV and somehow it came up that in Ohio whenever you renew your vehicle registration there is a additional fee of $100 for Hybrids and $200 for 'full' electric vehicles. they dont charge you extra when you buy your vehicle, just when you renew as far as i know.

Do they do this where you live?

now i understand that the states are scrambling to maintain their gas tax revenues, as Americans transition to a majority hybrid/full electric fleet gas tax revenue will no longer be able to support road construction and maintenance, the current spending is woefully inadequate as it is. bridges & roads are crumbling ALL over America so obviously they need all the $$ they can get. i can sorta see the logic but disagree with my states math. in Ohio the state portion of the gas tax is $0.385 p/gl. since ive retired i only drive about 5-7k miles per year, at 7k miles = 175 gl = $67.37 in gas tax. why do i have to pay so more to own a less polluting vehicle??

now if i had a full electric that would mean a even more substantial penalty for adopting a technology thats not only good for the planet but is also being pushed BIG TIME by our and other governments. my bother-n-law lives in Florida and you pay a fee up front thats a % purchase price and thereafter you pay the same registration fee as everyone else.

i would institute a system whereby hybrid/electric owners would pay the same fee as everyone else along with some prorated sum based on your yearly mileage totals which could be captured at your annual inspection(if your state does those). not perfect but better than charging me more than what i believe to be my "fair' share.

I don’t remember paying a fee for my 2019 Hyundai EV but that was before all the hullabaloo about missed taxes. I also did not pay an additional fee for my ‘22 or ‘23 Maverick Hybrids. All 3 vehicles registered in Florida.

I’d be getting an e-bike! They don’t even have to be registered in Florida!

Florida is too busy banning books and erasing history to worry about taxes😂

My ‘68 Cadillac gets 8-9 mpg. I think I should get a rebate with my renewals🤣

I meant no harm, I was just trying to say that you probably paid the extra $100 at time of purchase/registration. Personally, I wouldn't be opposed to a per-mile tax, as oppossed to a flat rate, but I think too many people would consider this an invasion of privacy.

We pay an additional fee, not just for EVs and Hybrids, but for any fuel efficient vehicle.

From Virginia DMV:

"Effective July 1, 2020, all electric, hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles are assessed a highway use fee in addition to the annual registration fee.

The highway use fee is imposed at the time of registration renewal to recoup the fuels taxes not paid by owners of fuel efficient vehicles having a combined mile per gallon (MPG) rating of 25 MPG or greater."

When I look at the web site, I can't find the amount of the fee without putting in my VIN number. I'll just wait until I get the bill.

My Maverick's initial registration fee was $255 for three years in CT, at least that what the registration certificate states. I am not certain how they arrived to this fee, unless it is just a registration fee for the dealer registered passenger vehicles?
Renewal for passenger vehicles are on a case-by-case bases, indicated on the registration renewal mail received. I won't know my renewal fee until 2026. Based on the CT DMV website, electric vehicles registration fee per year is $7.50 less, than ICE, Hybrid and PHEV.
